Wonders of the Monsoon (also known as Lands of the Monsoon) [1] is a BBC documentary series which ran for five episodes between 5 October 2014 [2] and 2 November 2014, and aired on BBC Two. The series focus for a variety of locations around the world features including India, Australia and islands of the Pacific Ocean which are all the focus of the monsoon rains.

Starting in the monsoon region of Northern Australia before moving onto Christmas Island where the rains trigger a migration of red crabs. In India, the Delhi stock exchange sees the price of rice rise every day the rains fail to appear.

Pre-monsoon showers arrive in Thailand as Assamese macaque play in the water and eat water snails. Four months of rain begin in India where male Indian common toads turn yellow-gold for one day in a chance to mate. The Mekong in Cambodia swells, forcing water back up its tributary to fill the Tonlé Sap Lake.

The winds reverse as the monsoon doesn't bring rain but brings in dry air and drought in places. In Borneo, a bearded pig has worked out a strategy for surviving. Camels in the Rajasthan Desert provide vital transport while elephants gather in Sri Lanka for the appearance of fresh grass.

The Black-crested macaque thrive in large troops on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi where they eat fruit. Soil erosion is a problem in rainswept Borneo, so plants have to compete for scarce nutrients and take to evolving some ingenious techniques to survive.

People of Palawan still hunt in forest and live in caves, and their existence relies on a respect for nature. The Bishnoi have also been known to lay their lives down for nature. With a minimal farmland that supports a high density of people, the group are under pressure.

Merchandise

A two-disc DVD [14] and two-disc Blu-ray set [15] for the series were released on 17 November 2014.

In Australia and New Zealand, DVD was released by ABC DVD/Village Roadshow on 21 October 2015. [16]

<i>Doctor Who</i> (season 22) Season of television series

The twenty-second season of British science fiction television series Doctor Who began on 5 January 1985 and ended on 30 March 1985. It opened with the serial Attack of the Cybermen and ended with the serial Revelation of the Daleks. The season returned to the traditional Saturday transmission for the first time since Season 18, but for the first and only time in the series' first run it featured 45-minute episodes in its entirety. During transmission, BBC One controller Michael Grade announced an 18-month hiatus for the series, partly citing the violence depicted in the stories of the season. The fifth season of British science fiction television series Doctor Who began on 2 September 1967 with the first story of season 5 The Tomb of the Cybermen and ended on 1 June 1968 with The Wheel in Space. Only 22 out of 40 episodes are held in the BBC archives; 18 remain missing. As a result, only 2 serials exist entirely. However, The Abominable Snowmen, The Ice Warriors, The Web of Fear, and Fury from the Deep have had their missing episodes reconstructed using animation.

Life Story is a British natural-history television series with Mike Gunton, Rupert Barrington and Tom Hugh-Jones from the BBC Natural History Unit on the production team. The six-part series reveals the challenges faced by individual animals at different stages of their lives and was first broadcast on BBC One in 2014. The series is introduced and narrated by David Attenborough.

The third series of the British television sitcom Absolutely Fabulous premiered on BBC One on 30 March 1995 and concluded on 11 May 1995, consisting of six episodes. The third series was originally intended to be the final series of Absolutely Fabulous. However, the following year, Jennifer Saunders decided to write a two-part special titled "The Last Shout", serving as an official finale to the third series. The series was later revived five years later in 2001.

<i>Absolutely Fabulous</i> (series 4) Season of television series

The fourth series of British television sitcom Absolutely Fabulous premiered on BBC One on 31 August 2001 and concluded on 5 October 2001, consisting of six episodes. Originally, Absolutely Fabulous was to end with the third series, then two-part special "The Last Shout" was created to serve as an official finale to the series. However, in 2000, Jennifer Saunders created and wrote a television pilot for a proposed new series, Mirrorball, in which she intended to reunite the cast of Absolutely Fabulous in new roles and a different plot. Saunders, along with Joanna Lumley, Julia Sawalha, Jane Horrocks and June Whitfield, returned for the pilot, but the series was never commissioned. Nevertheless, Mirrorball inspired Saunders to revive Absolutely Fabulous and a fourth series was produced. A Christmas special, "Gay", was produced following the fourth series and was broadcast in 2002.

<i>Planet Earth II</i> 2016 British nature documentary television series

Planet Earth II is a 2016 British nature documentary series produced by the BBC as a sequel to Planet Earth, which was broadcast in 2006. The series is presented and narrated by Sir David Attenborough with the main theme music composed by Hans Zimmer.

Dynasties is a 2018 British nature documentary series on five vulnerable or endangered species known to form enduring populations: chimpanzee, emperor penguin, lion, tiger and African wild dog. The series is produced by the BBC Natural History Unit and narrated by David Attenborough. The music score was composed by Benji Merrison. Each episode ends with Dynasties On Location, a behind the scenes look at the planning of each episode, which could be years in advance before production crew even started filming.
