Workshed is an English heavy metal band formed in Harrogate in 2014. The band consists of former Cathedral and Acid Reign members Adam Lehan and Mark Wharton, and Helen Storer. [1] Their debut self-titled album, recorded by Jaime Arellano, [2] was released on 13 September 2019 through Rise Above Records. [3]

History

Lehan and Wharton had both played in Harrogate thrash metal band Acid Reign together in the 1980s. [4] Eventually, the two would find themselves in doom metal band Cathedral, however both departed after the release of Statik Majik [2] By 2014, Lehan had approached Wharton with a number of guitar riffs he had written, leading to them beginning to write music together once again. After some time, the pair approached former-Cathedral vocalist Lee Dorian, who agreed to release their album through his label Rise Above Records. [5] Decibel premiered the track "Safety Behaviours" off of the album on 30 August 2019 [2] and their self-titled debut album was released on 13 September the same year. [3] In October 2021, they announced Wharton's departure, and his replacement by Scott Naylor. [6]

Musical style and influences

The band's music has been described as doom metal, [2] sludge metal [1] and experimental metal. [7] Outburn described the sound of their debut album as "redolent of all the great doom and sludge heroes of the past and thrillingly fresh and inventive, songs like rampaging opener ‘The Windowpanes At The Lexington’ and the pulverising ‘Nowhere To Go’ sound very much like the finished, riff-worshipping article" as well as referring to it as "hate-doom". [1] Whereas, Dead Rhetoric described it as "unafraid to obliterate in distortion gloom for the crux of an arrangement, then lob a serene clean passage midway through before a gargantuan low-tuned riff shatters the airspace". [8]

Paradise Lost (band)

Paradise Lost are an English gothic metal band that formed in 1988 in Halifax, considered to be among the pioneers of the death-doom genre, and regarded as the main influence for the later gothic metal movement. Bands that have cited Paradise Lost as an influence, or have covered them, include My Dying Bride, Anathema, The Gathering, Amorphis, Cradle of Filth, Katatonia, Moonspell, Lacuna Coil, HIM, Nightwish and many others. As of 2005, Paradise Lost have sold over two million albums worldwide.

Cathedral (band) English doom metal band

Cathedral were a doom metal band from Coventry, England. The group gained attention upon release of its debut album, Forest of Equilibrium (1991), which is considered a classic of the genre. However, the band's sound evolved quickly and began to adopt characteristics of 1970s metal, hard rock and progressive rock. After releasing ten full-length albums and touring extensively for over two decades, Cathedral broke up after the release of The Last Spire in 2013.

Saint Vitus (band) American doom metal band

Saint Vitus is an American doom metal band formed in Los Angeles in 1979. They are considered to be one of the first doom metal bands, and have been labeled as one of the "big four" of that genre, along with Candlemass, Pentagram and Trouble. Having released nine studio albums to date, Saint Vitus never achieved a popular breakthrough, but have exerted great influence on the development of doom metal, sludge metal, and stoner rock.

Trouble (band) American doom metal band

Trouble is an American doom metal band from Aurora, Illinois, formed in 1979. They are often considered one of the pioneers of doom metal, and have been referred to as one of the genre's "big four" alongside Candlemass, Pentagram and Saint Vitus. The band created a distinct style, taking influences of the British heavy metal bands Black Sabbath and Judas Priest, and psychedelic rock of the 1970s.

Deathcore is an extreme metal subgenre that combines death metal with metalcore. The genre consists of death metal guitar riffs, blast beats, and metalcore breakdowns. While there are some precursors to the concept of death metal fused with metalcore/hardcore elements seen in the 1990s, deathcore itself emerged in the early 2000s and gained most prominence beginning in the mid-2000s within the southwestern United States, especially Arizona and inland southern California, which are home to many notable bands and various festivals.

Acid Reign are an English thrash metal band, originally active from 1985 to 1991. The band rebooted in 2015 with just H remaining from the original line up. Along with Onslaught, Sabbat and Xentrix, Acid Reign are considered to be one of the "big four" of British thrash metal. To date, they have released three studio albums: The Fear (1989), Obnoxious (1990) and The Age of Entitlement (2019).

Forest of Equilibrium is the debut album of the British doom metal band Cathedral, released in 1991 on Earache Records. It is considered a classic of its genre, doom metal. Forest of Equilibrium was notably inducted into Decibel magazine's Hall of Fame in February 2006 being the 12th inductee for the Decibel Hall of Fame.

Adam Lehan is a British musician who has worked with doom metal bands Cathedral and Workshed, thrash metal bands Acid Reign, Deadline and Lord Crucifier and folk band Beneath the Oak.

Doomriders is an American heavy metal band from Boston, Massachusetts, United States. The band has released three albums on Deathwish, Inc. The band's vocalist/guitarist Nate Newton also plays bass in Converge and guitar in Old Man Gloom. Jebb Riley formerly played bass in There Were Wires. Doomriders have toured with Coliseum and Saviours. The band began work on their third studio album in 2011 with an expected release date in 2013 through Deathwish. Doomriders released Grand Blood on October 15, 2013.

Septic Tank (band)

Septic Tank are a British punk rock band formed out of Coventry doom metal band Cathedral. The band was originally formed in 1994, while Cathedral were on tour, and later reformed in 2013 after Cathedral's breakup. Once the band reunited, producer and former member of the UK band Trouble, Jaime "Gomez" Arellano, replaced drummer Barry Stern, due to his death in 2005. The band have currently released one self-titled EP and one full-length album, entitled "Rotting Civilisation".

Garry "Gaz" Jennings is an English musician best known for his work as the guitarist for doom metal band Cathedral. In addition, he has also worked as the guitarist of thrash metal band Acid Reign, punk rock band Septic Tank and heavy metal bands Lucifer and Death Penalty.

Mark Ramsey Wharton is a British musician who has worked as the drummer of Acid Reign, Cathedral, Cronos, Asomvel and Workshed.

<i>Floor</i> (album) 2002 studio album by Floor

Floor is the debut self-titled studio album by American sludge metal band Floor released in 2002 on the No Idea Records label. After recording EPs and demos over an approximate ten-year period in an attempt to capture the doom-pop sound they have become known for, the bands use of providing the biggest possible sound with minimal guitar work finally paid off. Giving it a positive rating, AllMusic's Gregory Heaney said of the album "...though the riffs here feel, at times, Sunn O)))-like, the thunderous drums help the whole package feel propulsive rather than ponderous."

J.J. Anselmi is an American writer and musician. He's the author of Doomed to Fail: The Incredibly Loud History of Doom, Sludge, and Post-metal (2020); and Heavy: A Memoir of Wyoming, BMX, Drugs, and Heavy Fucking Music (2016). Anselmi's writing has been featured in VICE, The A.V. Club, and other popular venues. He was recruited by Sepultura to write the liner notes for the band's 2017 reissue of the classic album, Chaos A.D. In addition to writing, Anselmi is an active metal musician.
