World Series of Fighting 11: Gaethje vs. Newell was a mixed martial arts event held on July 5, 2014, in the United States. [2] This event aired live in prime time on NBC.
Rousimar Palhares was set to make his first title defense against former UFC veteran Jon Fitch on this show. [3] On April 30, 2014, it was announced that the bout was canceled due to personal problems with Palhares. [4]
Fitch was then expected to face debuting Jake Shields. However, Shields was forced out of the bout due to an injury. [5] Fitch was then expected to face Josh Burkman in a rubber match. [6] However, Burkman was forced out of the bout due to an elbow injury. [7] Fitch eventually faced Dennis Hallman at the event [8]
This event featured the first Lightweight title defense for Justin Gaethje as he faced undefeated lightweight Nick Newell. [9]
Matt Hamill was expected to make his debut at this event but was sidelined due to a knee injury. [10]
Brian Cobb was expected to face Luis Palomino at the event, however Cobb was removed from the bout for unknown reasons and was replaced by T.J. O'Brien. [11] The bout between Palomino and O'Brien was later cancelled for unknown reasons.
Both Melvin Guillard and Cody Bollinger missed weight for their respective bouts. Guillard forfeited 15% of his purse to Gesias Cavalcante, while Bollinger forfeited over 20% to Pablo Alfonso. [12]

Dennis Lloyd Hallman is an American former professional mixed martial artist who competed from 1996 to 2015. A veteran of 75 fights, he competed in various promotions including the UFC, Strikeforce, IFL, the World Series of Fighting, Titan FC, Shooto, and King of the Cage. He is also notable for being the only fighter other than George St. Pierre and B.J. Penn to defeat former UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Hughes twice.

Jonathan Parker Fitch is an American retired mixed martial artist. He has competed in the Welterweight divisions of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), the Professional Fighters League (PFL), and most recently for Bellator MMA. In the UFC, Fitch compiled a record of 14–3–1 and once challenged for the UFC Welterweight Championship. In the PFL, Fitch achieved championship success when he won the PFL Welterweight Championship, and he also once challenged for the Bellator MMA Welterweight World Championship.
Melvin Paul Guillard, Jr. is an American mixed martial artist who competes in the Middleweight division. Guillard most notably competed in the Lightweight division of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), Bellator MMA and World Series of Fighting. He debuted in the company on The Ultimate Fighter 2 television series, losing to Josh Burkman by decision in the first Welterweight elimination bout. Guillard currently holds the UFC record for most TKO/KO victories (eight) in the Lightweight division, surpassing the previous record held by Multi-Divisional Champion B.J. Penn with his knockout of Shane Roller at UFC 132. He again extended this record in his knockout victory over Mac Danzig at UFC on Fox: Johnson vs. Moraga.
Joshua Ray Burkman is a retired American professional mixed martial artist formerly competing in the Welterweight division. He formerly competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the World Series of Fighting, the XFC, and was a contestant on The Ultimate Fighter 2.
Gesias Cavalcante is a Brazilian professional mixed martial artist currently competing in the Lightweight division. He was the 2006 and 2007 K-1 HERO Middleweight Champion, and has also fought for Strikeforce, DREAM, Shooto, World Series of Fighting, and Cage Rage. Cavalcante also participated in the Dynamite!! USA event.
Rousimar Christian Palhares is a Brazilian mixed martial artist currently competing in the Welterweight division of Absolute Championship Akhmat (ACA). A professional competitor since 2006, he has competed for the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), World Series of Fighting (WSOF), Fight Nights Global (FNG), and Konfrontacja Sztuk Walki (KSW). His nickname Toquinho, Portuguese for "little tree stump", comes from his short, stocky, heavily muscled build and the low success rate his opponents have had in grappling him down to the canvas. Palhares is primarily known for his powerful ground game. Of his 16 submission victories 12 have come from leg locks. He is also known for his refusal to release submission holds when either the opposing fighter has signaled submission or the referee has called a stop to the bout, causing him to be fired by the UFC, and WSOF.
Luis Vicente Palomino is a Peruvian-American mixed martial artist and bare-knuckle fighter who is the current Lightweight and Welterweight champion for Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship, making him the first “double champ” in the BKFC. He also competed in the Lightweight division for the World Series of Fighting and Absolute Championship Berkut. In addition, he previously fought in the featherweight division.
Luiz Firmino de Carvalho Júnior, commonly known as Luiz Buscapé, is a Brazilian mixed martial artist, who fights at Lightweight. He has spent the majority of his career in Japan and has fought in Dream, Pride FC and Shooto. He now fights for the Blackzilians camp out of JACO HYbrid Training Center in Boca Raton, Florida.
