Fallon,Trainor,Douglas, and Stone wrote the song "Wrap Me Up" over FaceTime, during which Trainor described being "so nervous [her] heart was in [her] ass". [3] [4] Fallon claimed that he really liked the holidays while announcing the song. His idea was to write a song about wrapping gifts, which he sent to Trainor, someone he has "always wanted to do something with". Trainor agreed to the collaboration and changed its lyrics, renaming it from "Wrap It Up" to "Wrap Me Up" because it "sounds like condoms". [4] [5] Playing a snippet of it on his show,Fallon stated:"This song is a bop. The song is a banger. This song eats. This song slaps." [6]
"Wrap Me Up" is two minutes and 28 seconds long. [7] Stone produced the song;Stone and Trainor handled vocal production, and they also served as the recording engineers alongside John Arbuckle and Mike Wozniak. Ben Rice played the guitar, and Kurt Thum performed the programming. Stone,Fallon,Trainor and her brother Justin provided the background vocals. Serban Ghenea mixed the song, with assistance from Bryce Bordone, and Randy Merrill mastered it. [3]
Billboard 's Lars Brandle described "Wrap Me Up" as "a throwback doo-wop-meets-hip-hop Crimbo number". [1] In the song's lyrics,Fallon asks Trainor what present she is giving him for Christmas:"It's Christmas time,my dear / And we said no gifts this year / I got one question,if you'd let me / What did you get me?" Trainor replies that the present is her:"Is it Boujee? / Like Gucci? / Man,I thought I had it / No,baby, you're lookin' at it." [6]
iHeartRadio's Rebekah Gonzalez thought that "as anything to do with Trainor is—it's super catchy!" [8] Sydni Ellis of SheKnows described "Wrap Me Up" as "a banger", [9] and Jackie Manno of NBC wrote that "it totally lives up to its 'Christmas banger' expectations". [10] Writing for American Songwriter ,Matthew Wilson believed the song is "seductive,money-pinching,and most of all,it's catchy" and described the chorus as "delightfully playful". [11]
Fallon and Trainor performed "Wrap Me Up" live for the first time at Jimmy Kimmel Live! on November 27,2023. Trainor dressed up as a red-colored Christmas tree and Fallon wore a tuxedo, accompanied by four backup dancers and vocalists. It was followed by Fallon going onto a street and distributing presents to passers-by,which he uploaded as a social media post while stating:"I was so excited for this song to come out that I wanted to spread some holiday cheer and surprise folks on the streets of New York City with some presents. Hope you all love this song as much as I do." [1] [6]
