Stations can be affiliated to radio networks broadcasting a common radio format, either in broadcast syndication or simulcast or both. Signals can be either analog audio or digital audio. Television broadcasting also uses radio frequencies, but includes video signals.

Traditionally, the station was only obtained through cable, however in 1998 the station upgraded to a different frequency package, allowing for different frequencies by region. Radio 538 started the hip-hop and contemporary R&B program Juize, which developed into the radio station Juize.FM on 18 July 2004. Later, in 2011, Radio 538 created a sister station called TV 538.
CHOQ-FM is a Canadian radio station which began broadcasting in 2006. A non-profit community radio station for Franco-Ontarians in Toronto, Ontario, the station broadcasts at 105.1 on the FM dial. CHOQ is also available as a digital television radio feed on Rogers Cable in the Greater Toronto Area on channel 957. CHOQ's studios are located on Lansdowne Avenue in the Dufferin Grove neighbourhood, while its transmitter is located atop First Canadian Place.

Invented in 1933 by American engineer Edwin Armstrong, wide-band FM is used worldwide to provide high fidelity sound over broadcast radio. Northern Public Radio is the public radio service of Northern Illinois University. It consists of two full-powered FM stations and three lower-powered satellites, all affiliated with National Public Radio. The group is headquartered at NIU's campus in DeKalb, Illinois, with additional studios in Rockford. Although DeKalb is part of the Chicago radio market, Northern Public Radio serves as the NPR member for the Rockford market.
