History

The league was founded in 1990 following Yemeni unification. [3]

Format

As of 2010, two hundred and fifty-eight teams representing local sports club typically compete in the league as of 2010. These teams are organized into groups representing their governorates. The winners of each of Yemen's sixteen governorate leagues enter into a play-off system to determine overall league winners [4]

Promotion/Relegation

The league's top four clubs are promoted to the Yemeni Second Division while the four poorest performing clubs from the Second Division are relegated to the Third Division. [5] [6] [7] At times, including prior to the 2023/2024 season, clubs boycotted the league system for suspending the promotion and relegation system. [8] Prior the 2025/2026 season, a play-off tournament was held prior to the start of the season to determine which clubs which compete in the Second and Third Divisions. [9]
