Production

On July 7, 2020, HBO Max ordered a 12-episode animated series titled Young Love, based on the 2019 short film Hair Love . Matthew A. Cherry, who directed the film, and Carl Jones would serve as showrunners, and the series would be produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Blue Key Entertainment and Lion Forge Animation. Issa Rae reprises her role as the mother, named Angela, while Scott Mescudi voices Stephen. [1]

Reception

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 100% approval rating based on 16 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "'Vibrantly animated and brimming with authentic observations about family, Young Love is exemplary wholesome entertainment." [5] Metacritic assigned a score of 80 out of 100 based on 6 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [6]

The Kickstarter campaign for Hair Love raised nearly $300,000 and broke the record for the highest amount raised for any short film on the platform.

Hair Love received generally positive reviews and won Best Animated Short Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. A spin-off TV series titled Young Love was ordered by Max in July 2020 and premiered on September 21, 2023.

Toliver has worked as an executive at Walt Disney Animation Studios, 20th Century Fox Animation, and Sony Pictures Animation, and has supervised the production of films such as Ferdinand, Curious George and Meet the Robinsons. The show is produced by Hoorae Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment and centers on two Miami-based rappers who try to find success in the music industry. The series debuted at the American Black Film Festival on June 18, 2022, and was released on July 21, 2022. It was renewed for a second season in September 2022, which premiered on November 9, 2023. The season was originally set to debut on August 10, 2023, but was delayed due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. In January 2024, the series was canceled after two seasons.

<i>Velma</i> (TV series) American animated television series

Velma is an American adult animated mystery television series that was based on the character Velma Dinkley from the Scooby-Doo franchise. Developed and created by Charlie Grandy for HBO Max, it stars executive producer Mindy Kaling as the voice of the titular character, with Sam Richardson, Constance Wu and Glenn Howerton in supporting roles. Grandy also serves as the showrunner of the series. It revolves around Velma Dinkley and the other human members of Mystery Inc. before their official formation, making it the first television series in the franchise to not feature the character Scooby-Doo.
