On July 7, 2020, HBO Max ordered a 12-episode animated series titled Young Love, based on the 2019 short film Hair Love . Matthew A. Cherry, who directed the film, and Carl Jones would serve as showrunners, and the series would be produced by Sony Pictures Animation, Blue Key Entertainment and Lion Forge Animation. Issa Rae reprises her role as the mother, named Angela, while Scott Mescudi voices Stephen. [1]
The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reported a 100% approval rating based on 16 critic reviews. The website's critics consensus reads, "'Vibrantly animated and brimming with authentic observations about family, Young Love is exemplary wholesome entertainment." [5] Metacritic assigned a score of 80 out of 100 based on 6 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews". [6]
Carlos Saldanha is a Brazilian animator, director, producer, and voice actor of animated films who worked with Blue Sky Studios until its closure in 2021. He was the director of Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006), Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009), Rio (2011), Rio 2 (2014), Ferdinand (2017), and Harold and the Purple Crayon (2024), and the co-director of Ice Age (2002) and Robots (2005). Hair Love received generally positive reviews and won Best Animated Short Film at the 92nd Academy Awards. A spin-off TV series titled Young Love was ordered by Max in July 2020 and premiered on September 21, 2023.
