It consists of 26 episodes comprising 52 segments, alongside two standalone clip show specials, making it the longest season to date episode-wise. The series chronicles the exploits and adventures of the title character and his various friends in the fictional underwater city of Bikini Bottom. This is the first season without Hillenburg's involvement, following his death on November 26, 2018, though he is still credited as an executive producer. Marc Ceccarelli, Vincent Waller, and Jennie Monica were hired to replace him as executive producer roles after his death.

Peirce is also collaborating with the producers for the show. The show premiered on Paramount+ on February 17, 2022. In March 2022, the series was renewed for a second season, which premiered on July 7, 2023.

Prior to the series, Chilian served as a designer on Rick and Morty as well as a writer and storyboard artist on Uncle Grandpa. The series is produced by Cartoon Network Studios. It was originally set to premiere on Cartoon Network, but was moved to the then-upcoming streaming service, HBO Max. The first season premiered on July 23, 2020, on the streaming service. The series was renewed for a second season which premiered on March 11, 2021. The series made its linear premiere on Cartoon Network on August 6, 2021, with some episodes aired out of order. The third season was released on September 16, 2021, only six months after the show's second season premiered. The fourth season was released on May 26, 2022. The show also was the last to feature the voice of Louie Anderson before his death on January 21, 2022. On August 18, 2022, the series was removed from HBO Max.

It is a spiritual successor to the television series Harvey Birdman, Attorney at Law created by Michael Ouweleen and Erik Richter, which itself was a comedic spin-off of the original 1967 Birdman cartoon and Space Ghost Coast to Coast. The series stars the voices of Paget Brewster, Rob Delaney, Sonia Denis, Kether Donohue, John Doman, Negin Farsad, Tony Hale and River L. Ramirez. The series premiered on Adult Swim on April 5, 2021. Unlike in the original Birdman cartoon, the Hanna-Barbera-owned characters—including Birdman himself—are missing from the series.
