The 1984 Winter Olympics, officially known as the XIV Olympic Winter Games and commonly known as Sarajevo '84, was a winter multi-sport event held between 8 and 19 February 1984 in Sarajevo, Yugoslavia. It was the first Winter Olympic Games held in a Slavic language-speaking country, as well as the only Winter Olympics held in a communist country before the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing, China. It was the second consecutive Olympic Games to be so held, after the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union.
Japan competed at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. Shizuka Arakawa won the country's only medal, a gold, in women's figure skating. She was the first person born and raised in Asia to become an Olympic champion in that event. Johnny Spillane is an American athlete who competes in Nordic combined, a combination event consisting of ski jumping and cross-country skiing. Spillane is a world champion and three-time Olympic silver medalist. He announced his retirement from Nordic combined on April 18, 2013.

Susumu Kobayashi is a Japanese sport shooter. Kobayashi represented Japan at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, where he competed in two pistol shooting events, along with his teammate Tomoyuki Matsuda. He scored a total of 577 targets in the preliminary rounds of the men's 10 m air pistol, by four points ahead of Poland's Wojciech Knapik from the final attempt, finishing only in twenty-third place. Three days later, Kobayashi placed tenth in his second event, 50 m rifle pistol, by one point behind Matsuda from the final attempt, with a total score of 558 targets.
The men's single skating competition of the 1960 Winter Olympics was held at the Blyth Arena in Squaw Valley, California, United States. The compulsory figures section took place on Wednesday 24 February 1960 with the free skating section concluding the event two days later. Each judge ranked each skater by Ordinal Placement from first to last place. If a skater was ranked first by a majority of the judges, that skater was placed first overall, this process was repeated for each place. If more than one skater had a majority ranking for the same position then a series of tiebreaks were in place, indicated in order in the result section.

Ryōyū Kobayashi is a Japanese ski jumper. He is one of the most successful contemporary athletes in ski jumping, having won during the 2018–19 season thirteen World Cup events and all six possible titles in the World Cup season: overall title, ski flying title, Four Hills Tournament, Raw Air, Planica7, and Willingen Five. He is the third ski jumper in the history to win all four competitions in the Four Hills Tournament. He won a gold medal at the 2022 Olympic Games in Beijing on the normal hill and the silver medal on the large hill.
Takako Kobayashi is a Japanese judoka. She competed in the women's half-middleweight event at the 1992 Summer Olympics.
Takeshi Kobayashi is a Japanese wrestler. He competed in the men's Greco-Roman 68 kg at the 1976 Summer Olympics.
