The Zaca Oil Field is an oil field in central Santa Barbara County, California, about 20 miles southeast of Santa Maria. One of several oil fields in the county which produce heavy oil from the Monterey Formation, the field is hidden within a region of rolling hills, north of the Santa Ynez Valley. As of 2011, the principal operator of the oil field is Greka Energy and the operator of the "Zaca Field Extension Project" is Underground Energy. The field is known to contain heavy crude oil and Underground Energy has recently discovered a lower sub-thrust block in the field, which was not previously produced by the field's historical operators. The field was discovered in 1942, reached peak production in 1954, and remains active with more than thirty oil wells and continues to grow.
The Zaca oil field is about four miles long by a quarter-mile across, running from northwest to southeast, paralleling U.S. Highway 101, which is about two miles to the southwest. Its southern extent is about four miles north of the town of Los Olivos, not counting the eastern "Zaca Field Extension Project", which surrounds the existing oil field and increases the southern extent by another three miles. Underground Energy acquired the acreage which circles the existing Zaca Oil Field in an acquisition completed in November of 2011. [1] Total productive area of the oil field is approximately one square mile. [2]
The oil field lies perpendicular to a series of ridges which form the foothills of the San Rafael Mountains, and from northwest to southeast is dissected by San Antonio Creek, Canada del Comasa, and Zaca Creek. Drainage is to the southwest, and out to the Pacific Ocean via San Antonio Creek to the west, for San Antonio Creek and Canada del Comasa, and the Santa Ynez River to the southwest, for Zaca Creek. Terrain is rolling to steep, with flat bottomlands along Zaca Creek. Most of the oilfield operations are invisible from public rights-of-way with the exception of oil pumps and a water evaporation pond along Foxen Canyon Road. Native vegetation is a mix of chaparral and oak woodlands (California montane chaparral and woodlands), with vineyards and agricultural land uses interspersed with oilfield operations (the Firestone Vineyard is adjacent to the southeastern end of the oil field; some of the oil pumps are on Firestone-owned land).
The region has a Mediterranean climate, with cool and rainy winters, and dry summers during which the heat is greatly diminished by prevailing winds from the cold waters of the Pacific Ocean, thirty miles to the west. Approximately 15 inches (38 cm) of rain falls in a typical winter, with the rainy season lasting from around November to April.
The overall structure of the Zaca field is an anticline, with the oil-bearing units capped by impermeable beds covering them like the gabled roof on a house. [3]
The productive unit in the Zaca field is fractured shale of the Monterey Formation. This is the same unit which is productive in the nearby Orcutt and Lompoc fields. As in those fields, oil has pooled in the abundant pore space provided by the fractures and along bedding planes in the unit. [4] The Monterey Formation in this area dips to the south, and oil migrating updip has pooled against a vertical fault which marks the northeastern boundary of the field. The depth to the oil reservoir below ground surface varies from 4,000 feet at the northwestern extent of the field to about 1,000 feet at the southeastern end, with an average thickness of around 1,700 feet. [5] Above the reservoir are the non-oil-bearing Sisquoc, Foxen, and Paso Robles formations. [6]
Oil in the reservoir is in the "extra heavy" range, with API gravity ranging from 6 to 10.5, and averaging 8.0. In these low ranges, oil has difficulty flowing and usually requires assistance from a diluent, steam, water flooding, or another mechanism. Steam and water flooding have both been used on the Zaca field. Sulfur content of oil from the field is among the highest from any California reservoir, ranging from 6.76 to 8.00 percent by weight. [7] [5] Even in the earliest days of production, operators injected diluent in order to mobilize the heavy oil. [3]
Tidewater Associated Oil Company drilled the discovery well for the Zaca field in November 1942, during a period of rapid exploration for oil to aid the World War II war effort. The Davis No. 1 well produced from the fractured shale of the Monterey Formation, initially at 94 barrels a day, and settling at 150. Tidewater followed on this modest success by drilling other wells into the reservoir, and by 1948 there were ten wells producing, and it had extracted 348,000 barrels of oil. [3] In 1953, J. Paul Getty's Getty Oil acquired Tidewater, commencing a waterflooding operation to boost production, and by 1954 the field reached its peak annual production of 1.7 million barrels. [8]
The field operators attempted a cyclic steam recovery process in 1964, but abandoned it two years later. In 1967, Getty merged Tidewater with Missouri Oil, retiring the Tidewater name, and the field continued to produce under the new name. Texaco bought Getty Oil in 1984, and with it the operations on the Zaca field. Vintage Petroleum, then a separate company, purchased the field from Texaco in 1995 during a period in which the major oil companies were divesting many of their onshore California operations and selling them to smaller operators. Greka bought the field from Vintage in August 2002, and remains the principal operator as of 2011, though now under the name HVI Cat Canyon, Inc.
On November 1, 2011, Underground Energy, a Santa Barbara-based oil company specializing in extracting petroleum from difficult shale formations, acquired 7,750 acres adjacent to the field on the eastern side – the "Zaca Field Extension Project" – which they stated is estimated to contain over 20 million barrels of combined proved, probable, possible, and prospective reserves. [1] Netherland, Sewell and Associates Inc., an independent resource audit firm, stated their best estimate in their report dated August 23, 2012 Underground Energy's "Zaca Field Extension Project" has 493.2 million barrels of total petroleum initially-in-place on their acreage. This report also stated the company's interests includes 12.3 million barrels of contingent oil resources and 37 million barrels of prospective oil resources. [9]
The environmental compliance history of the field includes several risk assessment and remediation orders by the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District (SBCAPCD), and since the purchase by Greka, several significant oil and contaminated water spills, two of which were taken over by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. [10]
In 1991, the SBCAPCD ordered a Health Risk Assessment (HRA) of operations on the field, which at that time was run by Texaco. The assessment found significant cancer and non-cancer risks from emissions at several locations on the facility. [10] At the time of the next assessment, 1994, the risks had increased, from 29 in a million for cancer to 37 in a million, and in 1998 they had dropped to 22.58 in a million, with a "significance" threshold of 10 in a million. The contaminants driving the risk analysis were polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which were produced primarily by internal combustion engines on the site. After the 2003 HRA Greka was able to reduce emissions both for cancer and non-cancer risks to "non-significance" by removing some of the engines. As a result, SBCAPCD no longer considers the Zaca field to be a significant risk facility. [10]
However, several oil spills from facilities on the field brought Greka media attention. In 2007, Greka paid a fine of $17,500 for a tank leak at the Zaca field in which oil and produced water reached Zaca Creek. [11]
Another more significant spill occurred on January 5, 2008, during a rainstorm. During this event, between 800 and 1200 barrels of crude oil, and a larger amount of produced water, escaped from a storage tank through a damaged pump. Of this amount, an initially estimated 20 barrels of crude oil and 50 gallons of produced water breached the secondary containment berm and entered Zaca Creek. The U.S. EPA became involved in the incident in February 2008, issuing an order to Greka to clean up the spill pursuant to the Clean Water Act, since the spill was still present in the creek three weeks after the initial event, and had fouled the creekbed for more than a mile downstream. California Department of Fish and Game estimated the total spill amount to have been 1200 barrels of crude oil. [12]
However, Underground Energy has had a clean environmental compliance record and safety reports since they became the operator of the "Zaca Field Extension Project" in November 2011. [13]
As of the beginning of 2009, there were 30 active oil wells on the site, with another 16 shut in. Twelve wells were on the Monterey North Block and 18 on the South Block. Daily production was 7.6 barrels of oil per well in 2009, with an average water cut (the percentage of water in the total fluid pumped from the well) of 96.9 percent. [14]
Oil from the field is treated onsite at a small processing facility on the Davis Lease, consisting of heaters, an oil-water separator, and storage tanks. Gas from the field is used as fuel onsite to heat the oil in the tanks and power the pumping units. Excess gas is flared; none leaves the site. Sulfur is scrubbed from the gas prior to use. Water separated from the oil is reinjected into the producing formation, where it serves as a flooding mechanism to assist in moving the heavy oil to production wells. [15]
The Midway-Sunset Oil Field is a large oil field in Kern County, San Joaquin Valley, California in the United States. It is the largest known oilfield in California and the third largest in the United States.
The South Belridge Oil Field is a large oil field in northwestern Kern County, San Joaquin Valley, California, about forty miles west of Bakersfield. Discovered in 1911, and having a cumulative production of over 1,500 million barrels (240,000,000 m3) of oil at the end of 2008, it is the fourth-largest oil field in California, after the Midway-Sunset Oil Field, Kern River Oil Field, and Wilmington Oil Field, and is the sixth-most productive field in the United States. Its estimated remaining reserves, as of the end of 2008, were around 494 million barrels (78,500,000 m3), the second-largest in the state, and it had 6,253 active wells. The principal operator on the field was Aera Energy LLC, a joint venture between Royal Dutch Shell and ExxonMobil. Additionally, the field included the only onshore wells in California owned and operated by ExxonMobil.
The San Ardo Oil Field is a large oil field in Monterey County, California, in the United States. It is in the Salinas Valley, about five miles (8 km) south of the small town of San Ardo, and about 20 miles (32 km) north of Paso Robles. With an estimated ultimate recovery of 532,496,000 barrels (84,660,100 m3) of oil, it is the eighth-largest producing oil field in California, and of the top 20 California oil fields in size, it is the most recent to be discovered (1947). As of the end of 2006, the principal operators of the field were Chevron Corp. and Aera Energy LLC.
The South Cuyama Oil Field is a large oil and gas field in the Cuyama Valley and the adjacent northern foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains in northeastern Santa Barbara County, California. Discovered in 1949, and with a cumulative production of around 225 million barrels (35,800,000 m3) of oil, it ranks 27th in size in the state, but is believed to retain only approximately two percent of its original oil, according to the official estimates of the California Department of Oil, Gas, and Geothermal Resources (DOGGR). Of the top forty onshore oil fields in California, it is the most recent to be discovered, but by the end of 2008 only 87 wells remained in production.
Ellwood Oil Field and South Ellwood Offshore Oil Field are a pair of adjacent, partially active oil fields adjoining the city of Goleta, California, about twelve miles (19 km) west of Santa Barbara, largely in the Santa Barbara Channel. A richly productive field in the 1930s, the Ellwood Oil Field was important to the economic development of the Santa Barbara area. The Japanese submarine I-17 shelled the area during World War II, the first direct naval bombardment of the U.S. continent of the war, causing an invasion scare on the West Coast.
Greka Energy, legally HVI Cat Canyon Inc., is a privately held company engaged in hydrocarbon exploration principally in Santa Barbara County, California. Formed in 1999 after the acquisition and merger of several smaller firms, it is a subsidiary of Greka Integrated, Inc., a holding company headquartered in Santa Maria, California, and is wholly owned by Randeep Grewal.
The Beverly Hills Oil Field is a large and currently active oil field underneath part of the US cities of Beverly Hills, California, and portions of the adjacent city of Los Angeles. Discovered in 1900, and with a cumulative production of over 150 million barrels of oil, it ranks 39th by size among California's oil fields, and is unusual for being a large, continuously productive field in an entirely urban setting. All drilling, pumping, and processing operations for the 97 currently active wells are done from within four large "drilling islands", visible on Pico and Olympic boulevards as large windowless buildings, from which wells slant diagonally into different parts of the producing formations, directly underneath the multimillion-dollar residences and commercial structures of one of the wealthiest cities in the United States. Annual production from the field was 1.09 million barrels in 2006, 966,000 barrels in 2007, and 874,000 in 2008, and the field retains approximately 11 million barrels of oil in reserve, as estimated by the California Department of Conservation. The largest operators as of 2009 were independent oil companies Plains Exploration & Production and BreitBurn Energy.
The Ventura Oil Field is a large and currently productive oil field in the hills immediately north of the city of Ventura in southern California in the United States. It is bisected by California State Route 33, the freeway connecting Ventura to Ojai, and is about eight miles (13 km) long by two across, with the long axis aligned east to west. Discovered in 1919, and with a cumulative production of just under a billion barrels of oil as of 2008, it is the tenth-largest producing oil field in California, retaining approximately 50 million barrels in reserve, and had 423 wells still producing. As of 2009 it was entirely operated by Aera Energy LLC.
The Summerland Oil Field is an inactive oil field in Santa Barbara County, California, about four miles (6 km) east of the city of Santa Barbara, within and next to the unincorporated community of Summerland. First developed in the 1890s, and richly productive in the early 20th century, the Summerland Oil Field was the location of the world's first offshore oil wells, drilled from piers in 1896. This field, which was the first significant field to be developed in Santa Barbara County, produced 3.18 million of barrels of oil during its 50-year lifespan, finally being abandoned in 1939-40. Another nearby oil field entirely offshore, discovered in 1957 and named the Summerland Offshore Oil Field, produced from two drilling platforms in the Santa Barbara Channel before being abandoned in 1996.
The Rincon Oil Field is a large oil field on the coast of southern California, about 10 miles (16 km) northwest of the city of Ventura, and about 20 miles (32 km) east-southeast of the city of Santa Barbara. It is the westernmost onshore field in a series of three fields which follow the Ventura Anticline, an east-west trending feature paralleling the Transverse Ranges. Discovered in 1927, the oil field is ranked 36th in California by size of recoverable oil reserves, and while mostly depleted – now having, by California Department of Conservation estimates, only about 2.5% of its original oil – it remains productive, with 77 wells active at the beginning of 2008. Oil produced in the field flows through the M-143 pipeline, which parallels U.S. Highway 101 southeast to the Ventura Pump Station, at which point it joins a Tosco pipeline which carries it to Los Angeles area refineries. As of 2009, the primary operators of the field were Occidental Petroleum for the onshore portion, and Greka Energy for the offshore portion. The offshore part of the field is operated mainly from Rincon Island.
The Dos Cuadras Offshore Oil Field is a large oil and gas field underneath the Santa Barbara Channel about eight miles southeast of Santa Barbara, California. Discovered in 1968, and with a cumulative production of over 260 million barrels of oil, it is the 24th-largest oil field within California and the adjacent waters. As it is in the Pacific Ocean outside of the 3-mile tidelands limit, it is a federally leased field, regulated by the U.S. Department of the Interior rather than the California Department of Conservation. It is entirely produced from four drilling and production platforms in the channel, which as of 2009 were operated by Dos Cuadras Offshore Resources (DCOR), LLC, a private firm based in Ventura. A blowout near one of these platforms – Unocal's Platform A – was responsible for the 1969 Santa Barbara oil spill that was formative for the modern environmental movement, and spurred the passage of the National Environmental Policy Act.
The Lompoc Oil Field is a large oil field in the Purisima Hills north of Lompoc, California, in Santa Barbara County. Discovered in 1903, two years after the discovery of the Orcutt Oil Field in the Solomon Hills, it is one of the oldest oil fields in northern Santa Barbara County, and one of the closest to exhaustion, reporting only 1.7 million barrels (270,000 m3) of recoverable oil remaining out of its original 50 million barrels (7,900,000 m3) as of the end of 2008. Its sole operator is Sentinel Peak Resources, who acquired it from Freeport-McMoRan. In 2009, the proposed decommissioning and habitat restoration of the 3,700-acre (15 km2) field was part of a controversial and so-far unsuccessful deal between Plains, several environmental groups, Santa Barbara County, and the State of California, to allow Plains to carry out new offshore oil drilling on the Tranquillon Ridge, in the Pacific Ocean about twenty miles (32 km) southwest of the Lompoc field.
The Orcutt Oil Field is a large oil field in the Solomon Hills south of Orcutt, in Santa Barbara County, California. Discovered in 1901 by William Warren Orcutt, it was the first giant field to be found in Santa Barbara County, and its development led to the boom town of Orcutt, now the major unincorporated southern suburb of Santa Maria. With a cumulative production in 2008 of 870,000 barrels (138,000 m3) of oil, it is the largest onshore producing field in Santa Barbara County.
The Oxnard Oil Field is a large and currently productive oil field in and adjacent to the city of Oxnard, in Ventura County, California in the United States. Its conventional oil reserves are close to exhaustion, with only an estimated one percent of the original oil recoverable with current technology remaining: 434,000 barrels (69,000 m3) out of an original 43.5 million. However, the reservoir includes an enormous deposit of tar sands, ultra-heavy oil classed as an unconventional petroleum reserve, and potentially containing 400 million barrels (64,000,000 m3) of oil equivalent, should it become economically feasible to extract. Present operators on the field include Tri-Valley Oil & Gas Co., Anterra Energy Services, Inc., Chase Production Co., and Occidental Petroleum through its Vintage Production subsidiary. As of the beginning of 2009, there were 34 active wells on the field.
The Saticoy Oil Field is an oil and gas field in Ventura County, California, in the United States. The field is a long narrow band paralleling the Santa Clara River near the town of Saticoy. Discovered in 1955, it is one of the smaller but productive fields found in the region after most of the large fields had already been operational for decades. At the beginning of 2009 it still contained an estimated 387,000 barrels (61,500 m3) of recoverable oil out of its original 23.5 million, and had 15 wells remaining in operation. Vintage Production, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, was the primary operator on the field as of 2009.
The South Mountain Oil Field is a large and productive oil field in Ventura County, California, in the United States, in and adjacent to the city of Santa Paula. Discovered in 1916, and having a cumulative production of over 158 million barrels (25,100,000 m3) of oil, it is the 37th largest oil field in California and the second largest in Ventura County. As of the beginning of 2009, it retains 316 active wells, and has an estimated 1.4 million barrels (220,000 m3) of oil remaining recoverable with current technology. Vintage Production, a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum, was the largest operator as of 2009.
The Carpinteria Offshore Oil Field is an oil and gas field in Santa Barbara Channel, south of the city of Carpinteria in southern California in the United States. Discovered in 1964, and reaching peak production in 1969, it has produced over 106 million barrels of oil in its lifetime, and retains approximately 2 million barrels in reserve recoverable with present technology, according to the California State Department of Natural Resources. Currently the field is produced from three drilling platforms four to five miles offshore, within Federal waters outside of the tidelands zone. Two of the platforms are operated by Pacific Operators Offshore LLC (PACOPS), the operating arm of Carpinteria-based Carone Petroleum; the other platform is operated by Dos Cuadras Offshore Resources (DCOR). The Carpinteria field is the 50th largest field in California by total original oil in place, as of the end of 2008.
The Mesa Oil Field is an abandoned oil field entirely within the city limits of Santa Barbara, California, in the United States. Discovered in 1929, it was quickly developed and quickly declined, as it proved to be but a relatively small accumulation of oil in a single geologic formation. While the field was active in the 1930s, residential development in most of the Mesa neighborhood of Santa Barbara came to a halt. The field included two major productive areas with a total surface extent of only 210 acres (0.85 km2), and produced 3,700,000 barrels (590,000 m3) of oil during its brief lifetime.
The Cat Canyon Oil Field is a large oil field in the Solomon Hills of central Santa Barbara County, California, about 10 miles southeast of Santa Maria. It is the largest oil field in Santa Barbara County, and as of 2010 is the 20th-largest in California by cumulative production.
The Honor Rancho Oil Field is an approximately 600-acre oil field and natural gas storage facility in Los Angeles County, California, on the northern border of the Valencia neighborhood of Santa Clarita, near the junction of Interstate 5 and westbound California State Route 126. Discovered in 1950 and quickly developed, the field's oil production peaked in the 1950s, but remains productive in 2016. In 1975 Southern California Gas Company (SoCalGas), the gas utility serving Southern California, began using one of its depleted oil producing zones, the Wayside 13 zone, as a gas storage reservoir, and it became the second-largest in their inventory after the Aliso Canyon gas storage facility. The field shares part of its extent with the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center, which includes a maximum-security prison.
