Zen Browser is a free and open-source fork of Mozilla Firefox, with its main focus being privacy and customizability, and it is licensed under the Mozilla Public License 2.0 (MPL 2.0). [1] Its repository can be found on GitHub. [2] [3]
Zen Browser started development on Αpril 1,2024 [4] after being mentioned in a Reddit post on r/browsers. On July 12,2024,the first public release of Zen Browser was released as an Alpha build, named 1.0.0-a.1. [5] As of now there are a total of 104 contributors to Zen Browser,52 desktop contributors and 52 site contributors. [6] Zen Browser also has a Twilight [7] build,an unstable experimental build for testing the latest features. On December 10,2024,Zen launched its new "Zen" branding, featuring a new logo and a new website, with its new tagline:"Welcome to a calmer internet",that is also the same day when it entered its beta phase.
Zen Browser is compatible with Microsoft Windows, macOS and Linux. It has three download options:optimized, made for newer systems, generic, made for older systems, and ARM64,made for devices that run on ARM64 architectures. The optimized version uses Advanced Vector Extensions 2 (AVX2),a CPU instruction set that enhances performance for certain tasks. This instruction set is available only on modern processors. [8]
The optimized builds of Zen Browser are compatible only with the following CPU families:
The Linux version is available for download as a Flatpak or as an AppImage. The macOS version is available for both AArch64 and Intel.
Zen Browser adopts the vertical tabs philosophy, which has been observed in other browsers like Vivaldi,Microsoft Edge and Brave, and is especially prominent in Arc Browser. Similar to Arc,vertical tabs are central to Zen's identity, but there are plans to implement horizontal tabs like a traditional browser in a future release. [9]
Zen Browser has many distinct features, like Split View, which allows you to split any number of websites into multiple tiled panes inside a single window,Zen Sidebar,a built-in detachable sidebar for quickly opening websites side-by-side,and Zen Glance,a feature to quickly preview a website without leaving your current page.
However,Zen Browser currently lacks DRM-support,because it does not have a Widevine license. The developer has stated that acquiring such a license requires the payment of large fees and is therefore unfeasible. This means that DRM-protected media cannot be played in Zen Browser for the foreseeable future. [10] which may limit access to some streaming services and DRM-protected content. [11]
Liam Proven from The Register praised Zen Browser for being a Google-free browser. [12]
Jack Wallen of ZDNet praised Zen for being the "customizable Firefox." [13]
Zen Mods (formerly called Themes Store) is a Zen Browser feature launched on August 18,2024 which uses custom made UGC themes which can only be compatible with Zen. As of December 10,2024,the theme store has 75 total themes, further adding to the customizability.
Zen Browser has several security features to protect user data and privacy:
Mozilla Firefox is a free and open source web browser developed by the Mozilla Foundation and its subsidiary, the Mozilla Corporation. It uses the Gecko rendering engine to display web pages, which implements current and anticipated web standards. Firefox is available for Windows 10 and later versions of Windows, macOS,and Linux. Its unofficial ports are available for various Unix and Unix-like operating systems, including FreeBSD,OpenBSD,NetBSD,and other operating systems, such as reactOS. Firefox is also available for Android and iOS. However,as with all other iOS web browsers, the iOS version uses the WebKit layout engine instead of Gecko due to platform requirements. An optimized version is also available on the Amazon Fire TV as one of the two main browsers available with Amazon's Silk Browser.
Xeon is a brand of x86 microprocessors designed, manufactured, and marketed by Intel, targeted at the non-consumer workstation, server, and embedded markets. It was introduced in June 1998. Xeon processors are based on the same architecture as regular desktop-grade CPUs,but have advanced features such as support for error correction code (ECC) memory, higher core counts, more PCI Express lanes, support for larger amounts of RAM,larger cache memory and extra provision for enterprise-grade reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features responsible for handling hardware exceptions through the Machine Check Architecture (MCA). They are often capable of safely continuing execution where a normal processor cannot due to these extra RAS features, depending on the type and severity of the machine-check exception (MCE). Some also support multi-socket systems with two, four,or eight sockets through use of the Ultra Path Interconnect (UPI) bus, which replaced the older QuickPath Interconnect (QPI) bus.
A browser war is a competition for dominance in the usage share of web browsers. The "first browser war" (1995–2001) consisted of Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator, and the "second browser war" (2004-2017) between Internet Explorer,Firefox, and Google Chrome.
The land grid array (LGA) is a type of surface-mount packaging for integrated circuits (ICs) that is notable for having the pins on the socket —as opposed to pins on the integrated circuit, known as a pin grid array (PGA). An LGA can be electrically connected to a printed circuit board (PCB) either by the use of a socket or by soldering directly to the board.
The Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) is an Internet protocol used for obtaining the revocation status of an X.509 digital certificate. It is described in RFC 6960 and is on the Internet standards track. It was created as an alternative to certificate revocation lists (CRL),specifically addressing certain problems associated with using CRLs in a public key infrastructure (PKI). Messages communicated via OCSP are encoded in ASN.1 and are usually communicated over HTTP. The "request/response" nature of these messages leads to OCSP servers being termed OCSP responders.
Network Security Services (NSS) is a collection of cryptographic computer libraries designed to support cross-platform development of security-enabled client and server applications with optional support for hardware TLS/SSL acceleration on the server side and hardware smart cards on the client side. NSS provides a complete open-source implementation of cryptographic libraries supporting Transport Layer Security (TLS) / Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and S/MIME. NSS releases prior to version 3.14 are tri-licensed under the Mozilla Public License 1.1,the GNU General Public License, and the GNU Lesser General Public License. Since release 3.14,NSS releases are licensed under GPL-compatible Mozilla Public License 2.0.
Swiftfox was a web browser based on Mozilla Firefox. It was available for Linux platforms and distributed by Jason Halme. Swiftfox was a set of builds of Firefox optimized for different Intel and AMD microprocessors. Swiftfox was freely downloadable with open source code and proprietary binaries. Firefox extensions and plugins were compatible with Swiftfox, with notable exceptions. The name Swiftfox comes from the animal swift fox. Swiftfox differs from Firefox by a limited number of changes, and builds for different processors. Swiftfox was discontinued at some point prior to April 2017,and the project homepage now redirects to the creator's private Twitter account.
Mozilla Firefox 3.0 is a version of the Firefox web browser released on June 17,2008,by the Mozilla Corporation.
Tick–tock was a production model adopted in 2007 by chip manufacturer Intel. Under this model, every microarchitecture change (tock) was followed by a die shrink of the process technology (tick). It was replaced by the process–architecture–optimization model, which was announced in 2016 and is like a tick–tock cycle followed by an optimization phase. As a general engineering model, tick–tock is a model that refreshes one side of a binary system each release cycle.
Server Name Indication (SNI) is an extension to the Transport Layer Security (TLS) computer networking protocol by which a client indicates which hostname it is attempting to connect to at the start of the handshaking process. The extension allows a server to present one of multiple possible certificates on the same IP address and TCP port number and hence allows multiple secure (HTTPS) websites to be served by the same IP address without requiring all those sites to use the same certificate. It is the conceptual equivalent to HTTP/1.1 name-based virtual hosting, but for HTTPS. This also allows a proxy to forward client traffic to the right server during TLS/SSL handshake. The desired hostname is not encrypted in the original SNI extension,so an eavesdropper can see which site is being requested. The SNI extension was specified in 2003 in RFC 3546
The Platform Controller Hub (PCH) is a family of Intel's single-chip chipsets, first introduced in 2009. It is the successor to the Intel Hub Architecture, which used two chips–a northbridge and southbridge, and first appeared in the Intel 5 Series.
Mozilla Firefox 4 is a version of the Firefox web browser, released on March 22,2011. The first beta was made available on July 6,2010;Release Candidate 2 was released on March 18,2011. It was codenamed Tumucumaque, and was Firefox's last large release cycle. The Mozilla team planned smaller and quicker releases following other browser vendors. The primary goals for this version included improvements in performance, standards support, and user interface.
Mozilla Firefox 2 is a version of Firefox,a web browser released on October 24,2006 by the Mozilla Corporation.
Skylake is Intel's codename for its sixth generation Core microprocessor family that was launched on August 5,2015,succeeding the Broadwell microarchitecture. Skylake is a microarchitecture redesign using the same 14 nm manufacturing process technology as its predecessor, serving as a tock in Intel's tick–tock manufacturing and design model. According to Intel, the redesign brings greater CPU and GPU performance and reduced power consumption. Skylake CPUs share their microarchitecture with Kaby Lake,Coffee Lake,Whiskey Lake, and Comet Lake CPUs.
Ivy Bridge is the codename for Intel's 22 nm microarchitecture used in the third generation of the Intel Core processors. Ivy Bridge is a die shrink to 22 nm process based on FinFET ("3D") Tri-Gate transistors, from the former generation's 32 nm Sandy Bridge microarchitecture—also known as tick–tock model. The name is also applied more broadly to the Xeon and Core i7 Extreme Ivy Bridge-E series of processors released in 2013.
Firefox was created by Dave Hyatt and Blake Ross as an experimental branch of the Mozilla browser, first released as Firefox 1.0 on November 9,2004. Starting with version 5.0,a rapid release cycle was put into effect, resulting in a new major version release every six weeks. This was gradually accelerated further in late 2019,so that new major releases occur on four-week cycles starting in 2020.
