Zerifa Wahid is an Indian actress known for her works in Assamese films. [1] Her prominent features include Baandhon , which won the 60th National Film Awards for Best Feature Film in Assamese directed by Jahnu Baruah. [2] and the best film in the Indian Films Competition held at the Bengaluru International Film Festival for the year 2012. [3]
Zerifa Wahid started her career in acting as a child actor by making her debut in the Assamese Feature film Abhimaan in 1990. Alongside her brilliant academic career, she managed to continue with her passion for acting and worked as a leading Heroine in numerous Assamese Feature Films, Television Serials, Video Films, Music albums and TV commercials. A very young, school going Zerifa played leading heroine in films like Agnigarh, Atikram, Dhua etc. She played the lead heroine in Zubeen Garg's Tumi Mor Mathu Mor. and became known for playing characters which were modern and progressive in outlook. Some of her successful films are Seuji Dharani Dhuniya, Anya Ek Jatra, Gun Gun Gane Gane, Agnisakhi (for which she was awarded Best Actress by the Govt. of Assam), Nayak, Kadambari, Prem Geet, Deuta Diya Bidai and Ahir Bhairav etc. In Antaheen Jatra , Zerifa showed the beauty of a rural girl in bare minimum make-up. Ahir Bhairav, where Zerifa played a schizophrenic, is the first Assamese feature film to be shot entirely in London.
Zerifa Wahid has branched out in many sectors of social works, film and theatre productions. Zerifa is the Ambassador for Assam Autism Foundation and Special Olympics Bharat (Assam Chapter). She also endorses the IT brand Datamation.
Jahnu Baruah's Baandhon was the Inaugural film in the Indian Panorama section in the International Film Festival of India, Goa 2012, which also won the National Awards (Rajat Kamal) as the best regional film, and Bidyut Chakravarty's Dwaar released in 2013 received wide critical acclaim. [4]
Her film Raag: The Rhythm of Love with Adil Hussain, Kopil Bora and Kenny Basumatary released on 7 February 2014 in Assam, was released by PVR Cinemas nationwide on 7 March 2014. [5]
Zerifa Wahid's latest feature film to be released in June 2016 named Kothanodi: The River of Fables directed by Bhaskar Hazarika and starring Adil Hussain, Seema Biswas, Kopil Bora and others won the post -production grant and was premiered in the Busan International Film Festival in Oct 2015. The film was also officially screened in the BFI London Film Festival, MAMI Mumbai International Film Festival, Gothenburg Film Festival and many other prestigious film festivals across the globe.
Feature film Kothanodi: The River of Fables wins the Rajat Kamal for Best Film in Assamese language in the 63rd National Film Award 2016.
Zerifa Wahid is the first heroine of Assamese Cinema to have launched her own production house; "Zerifa Wahid Productions". [6] Being very intimately associated with the theatre movement in Assam with powerful performances in several stage plays and who loves to call herself a "Theatre Worker", Zerifa has successfully acted and produced well-known Stage Plays like Girish Karnad's The Fire And The Rain, the Assamese version of which was named Agnibrishti, British dramatist's Peter Shaffer's Five Finger Exercise, the Assamese Adaptation of which was named Pancharatna, Girish Karnad's "Nagamandala" etc. Nagamandala was selected in the "Mahrindra Excellence in Theatre Awards 2012" with ten nominations and was staged in Delhi on 5 March 2012. Purush, a play by Padmashree Arun Sharma was staged in 2012 under the banner of her production. In June 2013, Zerifa Wahid Production staged another very noteworthy play of Padmashri Arun Sarma named "NAPOLEON" at Rabindra Bhawan, Guwahati. The several shows of "NAPOLEON" won unprecedented response from the audience and media acclaim. Continuing with its tradition, Zerifa Wahid Production launched its latest play "MOROMOR BONDHU", an adaptation of A. R. Gurney's "LOVE LETTERS" in Assamese on 25 July 2014 in Guwahati.
Enlarging its creative endeavour, Zerifa Wahid Production introduced a festival of plays in the months of November and December 2014 named as "JUST THEATRE" in Guwahati. It showcased three plays namely, Girish Karnad's Nagamandala and Padmashri Arun Sara's Napoleon and A. R. Gurney's Love Letters in its Assamese adaptation named as Moromor Bondhu .
In 2015, Zerifa Wahid Production produced the Assamese Adaptation of Girish Karnad's very popular play, "WEDDING ALBUM". The several shows of the play was hugely enjoyed by the theatre lovers of Assam.
In March 2016, Zerifa Wahid Production premiered the English version of A.R. Gurney's "LOVE LETTERS" retaining the adapted name "MOROMOR BONDHU".
The production house is making preparation for its newest venture for the year 2016.

Girish Karnad was an Indian actor, film director, Kannada writer, playwright and a Jnanpith awardee, who predominantly worked in Kannada, Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Marathi films. His rise as a playwright in the 1960s marked the coming of age of modern Indian playwriting in Kannada, just as Badal Sarkar did in Bengali, Vijay Tendulkar in Marathi, and Mohan Rakesh in Hindi. He was a recipient of the 1998 Jnanpith Award, the highest literary honour conferred in India.
Assamese cinema, also known as Jollywood, is the Indian film industry of Assamese language. It is based in Assam, India. The industry was born in 1935 when Jyoti Prasad Agarwala released his movie Joymoti. Since then the Assamese cinema has developed a slow-paced, sensitive style. In the beginning the industry were called Jollywood, for Agarwala's Jyoti Chitraban Film Studio.
Jahnu Barua is an Indian film director. He has written and directed a number of Assamese and Hindi films. Some of his notable films are Halodhia Choraye Baodhan Khai (1987), Firingoti (1992), Xagoroloi Bohu Door (1995), Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Mara (2005), Konikar Ramdhenu (2003), Baandhon (2012), and Ajeyo (2014).
Kopil Bora is an Assamese actor, anchor, and All India Radio voice artist. He debuted in Bidyut Chakravarty's 2002 Assamese film Gun Gun Gane Gane and is known for his performance in Mon (2002), Ahir Bhairav (2008), Jetuka Pator Dore (2011), and Dwaar (2013).
Aparoopa is a 1982 Indian Assamese language drama film directed by Jahnu Barua. It is the first feature film of the director and also the first Assamese film produced by National Film Development Corporation of India. It stars Biju Phukan, Suhasini Mulay, Sushil Goswami and Girish Karnad. The Hindi-language version is titled Apeksha.
Ahir Bhairav is a 2007 Indian Assamese language drama film directed by Siva Prasad Thakur and produced by Dr Ronen Sarma, under the banner of Rondeep Productions (UK) Ltd. This is the first ever Assamese movie that was entirely shot in the UK and was the Assamese's second film to be shot outside India after Hiya Diya Niya (2000). It has been chosen by the British Film Institute, London, to be preserved in its archive.
Dwaar is a 2013 Indian Assamese drama film directed by Bidyut Chakravarty, with his own screenplay, and produced by Sanjive Narain and Bidyut Chakravarty himself. It was adapted from the Assamese short story Bahiroloi Jowa Baat by Apurba Sarma. Dwaar stars Kapil Bora, Zerifa Wahid and Mahika Sharma in the lead roles. The literal translation of the title means Door.

It was produced by Shankar Lall Goenka and stars Rupam Chetia and Jupitora Bhuyan in the lead roles. The film was released on 3 January 2014.

The film was initially released on 7 February 2014 in the state of Assam and later on 7 March 2014 in selected theaters across rest of India via PVR Director's Rare.
The Prag Cine Awards 2014 ceremony, presented by the Prag Network, honored the actors, technical achievements, and films censored in 2013 from Assam and took place on 22 March 2014, at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium in Bangalore, India. Actors duos Kopil Bora and Zerifa Wahid hosted the show. Veteran litterateur Arun Sharma, Kannada film director Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar and Bollywood film actress Mahima Chaudhary inaugurated the event.
The Prag Cine Awards 2013 ceremony, presented by the Prag Network, honored the actors, technical achievements, and films censored in 2012 from Assam and took place on 14 April 2013, at the GMCH Auditorium in Guwahati, India. Rajni Basumatary is an Indian filmmaker, screenwriter, producer and actor from Assam, India. She debuted as a director in 2014 with the Assamese language drama film Raag. The 2019 Boro language film, Jwlwi: The Seed was written, directed and produced by her. It won several awards including the Assam State Film awards for Best Actor (Female) and Best Film in Other Language category, the Jury’s Special Award at Bengaluru International Film Festival 2020, the Jury’s Special Mention at Guwahati International Film Festival 2019, Prag Cine Awards for Best Film in other than Assamese language and Sailadhar Baruah Film Awards for Best Screenplay. Her third directorial film Gorai Phakhri premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2023. It won Best Film at the 29th Kolkata International Film Festival under the Indian Language Films category. She was awarded Best Director at the 6th Sailadhar Baruah Awards. The film won the Gautama Buddha Award for Best Narrative Feature Film at the Nepal International Film Festival. She was awarded the Director's Vision Award at the 21st Indian Film Festival Stuttgart.
Assam State Film Corporation Ltd. (ASFFDC) is an organization undertaken by Government of Assam which aims in developing and promoting the legacy of Assamese cinema. It was incorporated on 4 September 1974 under Companies Act 1956 by the Government of Assam.
Filmfare Awards East is the Bengali segment of the annual Filmfare Awards, presented by The Times Group to honour the artistic and cinematic excellence in Bengali. The first installment of the awards were held for Bengali, Assamese and Odia films in a ceremony on 29 March 2014.
Local Kung Fu 2 is an Indian Assamese language Kung fu Martial arts-comedy film. It is directed by Kenny Basumatary and produced by Durlov Baruah. It is the spiritual sequel to 2013 film Local Kung Fu. The film is based on William Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors. The film-makers successfully raised money for post-production through crowdfunding and the film was released on April 19, 2017.
Bhoga Khidikee is a 2018 Indian Assamese drama film directed by Jahnu Barua. It was the opening film of 2nd Guwahati International Film Festival. The film is based on the real life experiences of a village girl in upper Assam and is set against the socio-political landscape of the state in 2015.
