Zim Smith Trail

The Zim Smith Trail is the main multi-use trail of a network of trails in Saratoga County, New York. Extending twelve miles, it connects the cities and towns of Mechanicville, Halfmoon, Clifton Park, Round Lake Village, Malta and Ballston Spa. The trail is the route of the former Delaware & Hudson Railroad, originally the Rensselaer & Saratoga Railroad which was completed in 1836. It is the only trail in New York state to be designated a national recreation trail by the U.S. Department of Interior and National Park Service.^[1]^[2]

The trail starts at Oak Street in Ballston Spa and runs through Malta's Shenantaha Creek Park. From there the trail passes under Interstate 87, the Adirondack Northway, and brings you through the village of Round Lake. From Round Lake Village the trail crosses over U.S. Route 9 and through a portion of the towns of Clifton Park and Halfmoon.^[3] As of 2020, it has now been extended to the city of Mechanicville. There are future plans to extend the trail north to Saratoga Springs.

The Zim Smith Trail is named after Lt. Col. Zimri "Zim" Smith, USAF (Ret) ^[4] who died in 1994. Zim was active in historic preservation in Saratoga Springs and founded Friends of Saratoga Battlefield.^[5]

The Saratoga and Schenectady Railroad was incorporated on February 16, 1831. The founders were Henry Walton, John Clarke, William A. Langworthy, John H. Steele, Miles Beach, Gideon W. Davison, and Rockwell Putnam. The line was opened from Schenectady to Ballston Spa on July 12, 1832, and extended to Saratoga Springs in 1833 for a total of 20.8 miles (33.5 km). New York State Route 146 (NY 146) is a state highway in the Capital District of New York in the United States. It extends for 43 miles (69 km) from Gallupville at NY 443 to near Mechanicville at U.S. Route 4 (US 4) and NY 32. NY 146 is a major thoroughfare in the city of Schenectady, just outside Albany. Most of the route follows an east–west alignment; however, the middle third of the route between Guilderland and Clifton Park runs in a more north–south manner in order to serve Schenectady. The Kaydeross Railroad, earlier known as the Eastern New York Railroad and Ballston Terminal Railroad, was an electric-powered trolley line that served industries along the Kayaderosseras Creek in the town of Milton, Saratoga County, New York. It was a "terminal railroad", which means it had an interchange at one end but terminated without any other interchange.

Rock City Falls is a hamlet in the town of Milton, Saratoga County, New York, United States. The principal roads are Route 29 and Rock City Falls Road. The hamlet achieved fame as the origins of Paper Bag King George West, who established his Empire Mill there in 1862. He went on to build the Excelsior Mill next door in 1866 and a mansion across the street. The George West House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2005.

The Kayaderosseras Creek, usually shortened to Kaydeross, is the largest river that lies completely within Saratoga County, New York State. It originates in the Kayaderosseras Range in the northern part of the county, passes through the towns of Corinth, Greenfield, and Milton, and serves as the boundary between the City of Saratoga Springs and the Town of Malta before emptying into Saratoga Lake.

It originates at the north end of Ballston Lake and runs approximately six miles (9.7 km) through the towns of Ballston and Malta, descending 100 feet before exiting into Round Lake.
