Ziyad Saleem (born 24 March 2003) is a Sudanese-American swimmer. Born in the United States, he competes internationally for Sudan. He competed at the 2024 Summer Olympics.
Saleem was born on 24 March 2003 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, being one of three children. [1] His parents and much of his family comes from Sudan, with most having fled the country due to war. [2] He has dual Sudanese-American citizenship. [3] He began swimming at a young age, with his parents having enrolled him in a course at age three. [3]
Saleem attended Rufus King International High School in Milwaukee where he competed for the swimming team, being a four-time finalist in the Wisconsin DI state championships. [4] As a junior, he won the 100m backstroke event at the Wisconsin DI championships with a time of 49.3 seconds. [5] He was a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American in 2020. [1] Saleem also competed for the Schroeder YMCA swimming team. [4] He was a finalist in the 100m and 200m at the 2019 Minneapolis Sectional tournament, competed at the 2019 Junior Nationals and won the 200m backstroke event at the 2020 Wisconsin 13&O Championships. Saleem signed to swim in college for the California Golden Bears. [4]
Saleem competed for California as a freshman in the 2021–22 season, being a member of the California team that won the Pac-12 Conference championship and the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) national championship. [1] In 2022–23, he competed at the Pac-12 Championships and reached the finals of the 100m backstroke event. [1] He helped the Golden Bears win another team NCAA national championship in 2023. [1]
Saleem competes internationally for Sudan. [2] In 2019, he competed at the CANA Junior African Championships in Tunisia, winning three silver medals (in the 50, 100 and 200 backstroke) and being the first Sudanese since the country's independence to advance to the finals of an event. [3] In 2021, he won three gold medals at the Arab Swimming Age Group Championships, and he also participated at the FINA World Swimming Championships (25m) that year for Sudan. [6]
Saleem competed at the FINA World Championships in 2022 and won a silver and bronze medal at the 2021 Islamic Solidarity Games (held in 2022). [6] He also won a silver and bronze medal at the 2022 African Swimming Championships. [6] He placed 24th in the 200m backstroke at the 2023 World Aquatics Championships. [6] In 2024, he won a total of three medals – two gold (100m, 200m backstroke) and one silver (50m backstroke) – at the African Swimming Championships. [6] He became Sudan's first-ever gold medalist at the event. [2]
Saleem later received a spot to represent Sudan at the 2024 Summer Olympics. [2] Competing in the 200m backstroke, he placed 27th in the preliminary round, failing to advance. [6]
Martin Liivamägi is an Estonian swimmer, who specialized in breaststroke and individual medley events. He is a two-time Olympian, a 2010 Pac-10 champion in the 200 m individual medley, a double NCAA team titleholder, a 43-time Estonian swimming champion, and a 24-time national record holder in different age groups. He also won a silver medal in the same stroke at the 2006 European Junior Swimming Championships in Palma de Mallorca, Spain.

Guy Marcos Barnea is an Israeli swimmer who represented Israel at the 2008 Summer Olympics, and has won three medals at the European Championships. As of March 2016, he held the Israeli records in the long course 50m backstroke (24.64), the short course 50m backstroke (23.27), and the long course 100m butterfly (51.36).
Robert "Bobby" Hurley is an Australian swimmer and former World Record holder in the short-course 50 metres Backstroke and 2012 World Champion in the same event. In 2009 he won a bronze medal as a team member on the 4 × 200 m Freestyle relay at the FINA World Championships in Rome. He won 6 medals at the 2010 Summer Youth Olympics, was the male overall winner of the 2012 FINA Swimming World Cup and was a World Championships silver medallist. He was the holder of 16 Hong Kong national swimming records.
Farida Hisham Osman is an Egyptian competitive swimmer who specializes in butterfly and freestyle events. She is an All-Africa Games gold medalist and Egyptian national champion and record-holder. Osman is the fastest female swimmer in Egypt and Africa, she is currently coached by Teri McKeever. Osman holds the senior national records for all the butterfly, freestyle and backstroke events, as well as African records in the 50m and 100m butterfly.
Thomas Allen Shields is an American competitive swimmer. He is a two-time Olympian and the current American record-holder in the short course 50-meter butterfly and 200-meter butterfly. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, he won a gold medal in the 4×100-meter medley relay, swimming the butterfly leg of the relay in the prelims. Later the same year, he became the first American to swim faster than 44 seconds in the 100-yard butterfly, setting a new American record of 43.84 seconds.

In February 2024, Gorbenko won a silver medal at the Doha World Championships in the women's 400 meters individual medley. Gorbenko represented Israel at the 2024 Summer Olympics in swimming in the 100m backstroke, 200m backstroke, 100m breaststroke, 200m individual medley, 400m individual medley, 4x200m freestyle relay, and mixed 4x100m medley relay.

Lea Polonsky is an Israeli swimmer. At the 2017 European Youth Olympics she won silver medals in the 200m Medley and the mixed 4×100m Medley Relay. At the 2019 European Junior Swimming Championships she won a bronze medal in the 200 IM, and at the 2024 European Aquatics Championships she won a gold medal in the 4×200m freestyle relay, and the silver medal in the 200m medley. Polonsky represented Israel at the 2024 Paris Olympics in the Women's 200 metre freestyle, the 200 metre individual medley, and the 4×200 metre freestyle relay.
Kevin Patrick Callan is a retired American competitive swimmer. In 2017, he won a silver medal in the 4×200-meter freestyle relay at the 2017 World Junior Championships. In 2020, he won silver medals in the 200-meter freestyle and the 400-meter freestyle at the year's U.S. Open Championships. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Callan was part of the 4×200-meter freestyle relay that took fourth place. At the 2023 NCAA Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships, he won a bronze medal in the 4×200-yard freestyle relay. He has a younger brother, Christopher Jack Callan, who currently swims at the University of Michigan.

At the 2023 European U23 Championships, she won the gold medal in the 200 L backstroke. At the 2022 European Aquatics Championships, he won the gold medal in the 200 metre individual medley. In 2023, he won the bronze medal in the 200 yard backstroke at the year's men's NCAA Division I Swimming and Diving Championships. In 2024, he won the gold medal in the 200 metre backstroke at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris.
Trenton Jeffrey Julian is an American competitive swimmer. He is a world record holder in the short course 4×200 meter freestyle relay and 4×100 meter medley relay. He won a gold medal in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2019 World University Games. He followed up with gold medals in the 4×200 meter freestyle relay at the 2021 World Short Course Championships, 2022 World Aquatic Championships, and 2022 World Short Course Championships. In the 4×100 meter medley relay, he won a world title and gold medal at the 2022 World Short Course Championships, swimming butterfly on each the prelims and finals relay.
