Zwigato is a 2022 Indian Hindi-language drama film directed by Nandita Das. [5] The film is produced by Applause Entertainment and Nandita Das Initiatives. Kapil Sharma and Shahana Goswami star as the leads. [6] [7] The film debuted at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival. The film was theatrically released on 17 March 2023. At the 69th Filmfare Awards, the film received three nominations, including Critics Best Film and Critics Best Actress [8]
The film, set in current times in Bhubaneswar, explores the life of Manas, an ex-factory floor manager. After losing his job, he is forced to work as a food delivery rider, grappling with the app on his phone and the world of ratings and incentives. He struggles to make ends meet for his wife, Pratima, his two children, and an ailing mother. Simultaneously, Pratima a homemaker, begins to explore different work opportunities to support his income, from being a masseuse for rich women to being a cleaner at a mall. The fears of these new experiences are coupled with the joys of newfound independence. [9]

The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival at the Contemporary World Cinema section in September 2022. [13] The Film had its Asian premiere at the Busan International Film Festival at 'A Window of Asian Cinema' in October 2022. [14] It was the opening film of the ‘Kaleidoscope section’ at the International Film Festival of Kerala in December 2022. [15]
It was released theatrically on 17 March 2023. [16] After the theatrical release, the Odisha Government declared the film tax-free in the state. [17]
On the review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes , 100% of 11 critics' reviews are positive, with an average rating of 7.3/10. [18] Anna MM Vetticad in Firstpost wrote "Zwigato is a film of unassuming depth and unobtrusive commentary. Why on earth didn’t someone make this before?" Nandita Das is an Indian actress and director. She has acted in over 40 feature films in ten different languages. Das appeared in the films Fire (1996), Earth (1998), Bawandar (2000), Kannathil Muthamittal (2002), Azhagi (2002),Kamli (2006), and Before The Rains (2007). Her directorial debut Firaaq (2008), premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and travelled to more than 50 festivals, winning more than 20 awards. Her second film as a director was Manto (2018). Based on the life of 20th Century Indo-Pakistani short story writer Sadat Hasan Manto, the film was screened at Cannes Film Festival in the "Un Certain Regard" section. In September 2019, Das produced a two-minute Public Service Announcement music video India's Got Colour. The music video is about the issue of colourism and urges the audience to celebrate India's diversity of skin colour. Her first book, 'Manto & I', chronicles her 6-year long journey of making the film. She wrote, directed, produced and acted in a short film called, Listen to Her, that sheds light on the increase in domestic violence and overburden of work that women have been facing during the lockdown.
