İlisu is a village and municipality in the Qakh District of Azerbaijan. It has a population of 1,370. It was the capital of the Elisu Sultanate. The postal code is AZ 3417.

Reserve

Ilisu State Nature Reserve was established on February 20, 1987, by decree number 57, with an area of 9345 ha. It is located on the south side of the Greater Caucasus (Gakh), between Zagatala and Ismayilli Reserve, at an altitude of 700–2100 metres. The area was expanded by the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Azerbaijan Republic dated March 31. Now its area is 17381.6 ha. [1]

Ilisu State Nature Reserve was established on the area of 93 km2 (36 sq mi) in 1987 in Qakh Rayon, Azerbaijan. It aims to protect natural complexes of southern slopes of Major Caucasus, to preserve rare and endangered flora and fauna, to restore forests and prevent erosion of soil and flood. The reserve accounts for 500 plant species with nearly 60 species of endemic ones. One can come across such animals as roe deer, wild boar and chamois.

It is also possible that the fortress was used in the beginning of the 19th century, during the clashes between the Russians and the mountain population. The area of the reserve is 12,322.84 hectares and 43 mud volcanoes are protected here. The world's largest mud volcano Toraghay is also protected in this reserve.
