On June 19, 1988, 20:19:52 UTC, an earthquake measuring 6.2 Mw struck the central Philippine island of Mindoro. The quake struck in the early morning at a depth of 16.7 km (10.4 mi). It had a maximum intensity of VI (Strong) [1] on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale, and was located 1 km north-northeast of Bagong Sikat. The focal mechanism indicated strike-slip faulting. Most of the damage was in Mindoro where two people died and four were injured. [2]

Earthquake and aftershocks

The earthquake occurred at 4:19 AM (PST) in the southwest part of the island, measuring Mw 6.2. It was felt with a Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong). [3] [1] The event was caused by strike-slip movement on a local fault which then produced aftershocks. [2] One of the strongest aftershocks recorded was a Mw 5.6 at 33 km depth. It occurred a day after the event. It reached an Intensity VI (Strong) on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale and was centered 4 km north-northwest of Santa Teresa (Southwest of Mindoro). [4]

Damage and casualties

The earthquake caused ground fissures near the coast of the town of San Jose, the town closest to the epicenter. The sea level rose at least five feet shortly after the quake that receded quickly. No buildings collapsed in the town, although many concrete walls were badly cracked. Damage was restricted to San Jose, as there were no reports of damage in other towns of the island. Two people were killed in the earthquake, one of them was a 63-year old man who suffered a heart attack moments after. A woman and her three children were injured when they were hit by a falling wall. [5]

With a moment magnitude of 6.2 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong), the shock injured two people and caused property damage estimated at $2.7 million in the affected areas. A potent magnitude 6.6 Mw intraplate aftershock occurred at 17:16 JST (08:16 UTC) on 11 April, in the Hamadōri region of Fukushima, Japan. With a shallow focus of 13 km (8.1 mi), the earthquake was centred inland about 36 km (22 mi) west of Iwaki, causing widespread strong to locally severe shaking. It was one of many aftershocks to follow the 11 March Tōhoku earthquake, and the strongest to have its epicentre located inland.

The 1988 Lancang–Gengma earthquakes, also known as the 11.6 earthquakes by the Chinese media were a pair of devastating seismic events that struck Lancang and Gengma counties, Yunnan, near the border with Shan State, Burma. The pair of earthquakes measuring magnitude 7.7 and 7.2, respectively, occurred 13 minutes apart. They were earthquakes were assigned a maximum China seismic intensity of IX and X, respectively. An estimated 748–939 people were killed and more than 7,700 were injured in 20 counties across five prefectures of Yunnan. Both earthquakes resulted in $US 270 million in damages and economical losses. Moderately large aftershocks continued to rock the region, causing additional casualties and damage.

In 1954, the state of Nevada was struck by a series of earthquakes that began with three M 6.0+ events in July and August that preceded the M 7.3 mainshock and M 6.9 aftershock, both on December 12. All five earthquakes remain some of the largest in the state, and the largest since the Cedar Mountain earthquake of 1932 and Pleasant Valley event in 1915. The earthquake was felt throughout much of the western United States.

March 2021 Miyagi earthquake Earthquakes in Japan

On March 20, 2021 at 18:09 JST. The magnitude 6.9 or 7.0 earthquake struck offshore east of Tōhoku, Japan at a depth of 54.0 kilometers (33.6 mi) to 60 kilometers (37 mi). It had a maximum JMA intensity of Shindo 5+ while on the Mercalli intensity scale, it earned a rating of VII. Power outages and some slight damage in Miyagi was reported.

The 2021 Maduo earthquake, also known as the 5.22 earthquake struck Madoi County in Qinghai Province, China on 22 May at 02:04 local time. The earthquake had a moment magnitude and surface-wave magnitude of 7.4. Highway bridges, roads and walls collapsed as a result of the earthquake. According to an anonymous source, at least 20 people were killed, 300 were injured, and 13 were missing. Officials stated that there were no deaths but 19 people sustained minor injuries. It was the strongest in China since 2008. It was assigned a maximum intensity of X in Machali, Maduo County on the China seismic intensity scale and Modified Mercalli intensity scale. This earthquake was preceded by another unrelated earthquake that occurred 5 hours earlier in Yunnan.

The 1986 Kalamata earthquake struck the southern Peloponnese Region of Greece on September 13 at 20:24 local time. The moment magnitude 6.0 or surface-wave magnitude 6.2 earthquake had an epicenter located near the coastal city of Kalamata. It was assigned X (Extreme) on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale caused by extensive damage in Kalamata. At least 20 people died and approximately 300 were injured.

The 1995 Menglian earthquake or 1995 Myanmar–China earthquake occurred on 12 July at 05:46:43 local time in the Myanmar–China border region. The earthquake had an epicenter on the Myanmar side of the border, located in the mountainous region of Shan State. It registered 7.3 on the Chinese surface wave magnitude scale (Ms ) and 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale (Mw ). With a maximum Mercalli intensity assigned at VIII, the quake killed eleven people and left another 136 injured. Over 100,000 homes in both countries were destroyed and 42,000 seriously damaged. Some damage to structures were also reported in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Thailand. The low death toll from this earthquake was attributed to an early warning issued prior to it happening. Precursor events including foreshocks and some seismic anomalies led to an evacuation of the area before the mainshock struck. It is thought to be one of the few successfully predicted earthquakes in history.

The 1990 Bohol earthquake occurred on February 8, 1990 at 15:15:32 which had a magnitude of 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale and VII on the Modified Mercalli intensity scale.
