2012 City and County of Swansea Council election

The fifth election to the City and County of Swansea Council was held in May 2012. [1] It was preceded by the 2008 election and will be followed by the 2017 election.

Overview

All council seats were up for election. These were the fifth elections held following local government reorganisation and the abolition of West Glamorgan County Council. The Labour Party made substantial gains and won back control of the authority, having lost their majority in 2004

Candidates

The contests were fought by most of the main parties but Labour was the only one to contest all of the seats.

Uplands by-election 2014

A by-election was held in Uplands ward on 20 November 2014 following the resignation of Labour councillor Pearleen Sangha. Peter May who lost the seat by 10 votes in 2012 won the seat back as an Independent. [3]

The 2008 Leeds City Council election took place on Thursday 1 May 2008 to elect members of Leeds City Council in England.

The fifth election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 1 May 2012. It was preceded by the 2008 election and was followed by the 2017 election. Plaid Cymru won 28 seats whilst Labour and the Independents won 23 each. The main feature of the election was a Labour recovery in the Llanelli area, and to some extent in the Gwendraeth and Ammanford area also, mainly at the expense of Independent candidates. Plaid Cymru lost ground to Labour in the Llanelli area but gained seats elsewhere, becoming the largest party. An Independent-Labour coalition was again formed, but with Labour as the leading partner. As a result, Kevin Madge replaced Meryl Gravell as the leader of the council.

The second elections to the City and County of Swansea Council were held in May 1999. It was preceded by the 1995 election and followed by the 2004 election.

The third election to the City and County of Swansea Council were held in May 2004. It was preceded by the 1999 election and followed by the 2008 election.

The fourth election to the City and County of Swansea Council was held in May 2008. It was preceded by the 2004 election and followed by the 2012 election.

The 1995 Cardiff Council election was the first election to the new unitary County Council of the City and County of Cardiff following the re-organization of local government in Wales. It was held on Thursday 4 May 1995. It was followed by the 1999 elections. On the same day there were elections to the other 21 local authorities in Wales and community councils in Wales. Labour won a majority of the seats. It was preceded in Cardiff by the 1991 elections to Cardiff City Council and the 1993 elections to South Glamorgan County Council.

The 2017 Welsh local elections were held on 4 May 2017 to elect members of all 22 local authorities in Wales. This included the Isle of Anglesey, which was previously up for election in 2013 due to having its elections delayed for a year. Community council elections also took place on the same day. These local elections were held as part of the 2017 local elections in the United Kingdom. Apart from Anglesey, the last elections were held in 2012. Normally these elections take place every four years, but the 2017 elections were postponed for a year in order to avoid clashing with the 2016 Welsh Assembly election, which itself had been postponed by a year to avoid clashing with the 2015 general election.

An election to City and County of Swansea Council was held on 4 May 2017 as part of wider local elections across Wales. The election was preceded by the 2012 election. Labour maintained control of the authority.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jane Dodds</span> Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats

Jane Dodds MS is a Welsh politician who has served as Leader of the Welsh Liberal Democrats since 2017. She was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Brecon and Radnorshire at the seat's 2019 by-election, but was an MP for only three months before being defeated in the general election later the same year. In May 2021, Dodds was elected to the Senedd on the Mid and West Wales list. This made her the only Welsh Liberal Democrat Member of the Senedd (MS) in the 6th Senedd.
