2008 City and County of Swansea Council election

The fourth election to the City and County of Swansea Council was held in May 2008. [1] It was preceded by the 2004 election and followed by the 2012 election.

Overview

All council seats were up for election. These were the fourth elections held following local government reorganisation and the abolition of West Glamorgan County Council. The Council remained under no overall control, the Labour Party having lost their majority on the authority in 2004

Candidates

The contests were fought by most of the main parties, with Labour and the Conservatives contesting all but one or two of the seats.

2008 Leeds City Council election

The 2008 Leeds City Council election took place on Thursday 1 May 2008 to elect members of Leeds City Council in England.

The fifth election to the Carmarthenshire County Council was held on 1 May 2012. It was preceded by the 2008 election and was followed by the 2017 election. Plaid Cymru won 28 seats whilst Labour and the Independents won 23 each. The main feature of the election was a Labour recovery in the Llanelli area, and to some extent in the Gwendraeth and Ammanford area also, mainly at the expense of Independent candidates. Plaid Cymru lost ground to Labour in the Llanelli area but gained seats elsewhere, becoming the largest party. An Independent-Labour coalition was again formed, but with Labour as the leading partner. As a result, Kevin Madge replaced Meryl Gravell as the leader of the council.

The second elections to the City and County of Swansea Council were held in May 1999. It was preceded by the 1995 election and followed by the 2004 election.

The fifth election to the City and County of Swansea Council was held in May 2012. It was preceded by the 2008 election and will be followed by the 2017 election.

2019 Winchester City Council election

Elections to Winchester City Council took place on Thursday 2 May 2019, alongside other local elections across the country. The Conservatives Party held a narrow majority of one at the last election, with the seats contested in this election being last contested in 2016 election. The Conservatives defended 10 seats, whilst the Liberal Democrats defended 4. Town and parish councils in the city boundary were also up for election.

The sixth and last election to South Glamorgan County Council was held in May 1993. It was preceded by the 1989 election. Following local government re-organization the authority was abolished in 1996 and its powers transferred to two unitary authorities, Cardiff City Council and the Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council. Elections for the two shadow authorities were held in 1995..

The 2022 Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council election is currently taking place as of 5 May 2022. One third of councillors—21 out of 63—will be elected. The election will take place alongside the 2022 South Yorkshire mayoral election and other local elections across the United Kingdom.
