Plaid Cymru

The 2022 Gwynedd Council election took place on 5 May 2022 [1] to elect 69 members from 65 wards to Gwynedd Council. On the same day, elections were held to the other 21 local authorities and to community councils in Wales as part of the 2022 Welsh local elections. The previous Gwynedd all-council election took place in May 2017 and future elections will take place every five years.

Contents

The election saw the amount of councillors elected to Gwynedd Council reduced, from 75 to 69, as part of boundary changes to the council carried out by the Local Democracy and Boundary Commission for Wales. [2] 28 councillors were elected unopposed, an increase from the 2017 Gwynedd Council election which saw 21 councillors elected unopposed, despite the reduction in the total number of seats.

Election results

Plaid Cymru held control of the council, increasing their number of councillors to 44. [3] 23 independent councillors were elected (including sitting Llais Gwynedd councillors who used a blank description on the ballot paper) [4] – a collective loss of nine seats. Labour and the Liberal Democrats returned one seat each. [5] [1]

Ieuan Wyn Jones is a Welsh politician who was the Deputy First Minister in the Welsh Government from 2007 to 2011. He was the Member of the National Assembly for Wales for the Ynys Môn constituency from 1999 to 2013, and he was also leader of Plaid Cymru from 2000 to 2012. Jones served as Member of Parliament for Ynys Môn constituency from 1987 to 2001, when he retired to focus on his work in the Welsh Assembly. Dafydd Wynne Wigley, Baron Wigley, is a Welsh politician who served as the leader of Plaid Cymru from 1981 to 1984 and again from 1991 to 2000. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Caernarfon from 1974 to 2001 and as the Member of the Welsh Assembly for Caernarfon from 1999 to 2003. In 2010, Wigley was granted life peerage, taking his seat in the House of Lords in 2011.

It lies in the traditional county of Caernarfonshire but is currently administered as part of the unitary authority of Gwynedd. It had a population of 4,076 in 2011, the population declining slightly to 3,947 in 2021. of whom a large proportion, 81%, were Welsh speaking. Pwllheli is the place where Plaid Cymru was founded. It is the birthplace of the Welsh poet Sir Albert Evans-Jones.

"Arfon" is a historical name for the area, meaning "facing Anglesey"; it is also the name of the former district council. This seat was created by the Welsh Boundary Commission in time for the 2010 general election; it replaced the old seat of Caernarfon. Bangor was in the old seat of Conwy. The same boundaries were used for the Arfon Welsh Assembly constituency in the 2007 Welsh Assembly election.

The North Wales Medical School is a new medical school at Bangor University in North Wales. It currently teaches Biomedical Science, Medical Sciences and Pharmacology, with student intake for Medicine to commence in September 2024.
