Balewadi is a residential suburban town of Pune, [1] located in the city's Western Metropolitan Corridor. It is famous for the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex which had hosted both the National Games in 1994 and the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games. The complex had also hosted the second edition of Khelo India Youth Games, [2] which kicked off on 9 January 2019.

Infrastructure

Balewadi was a village at the edge of the city of Pune until 1997, when it was integrated into the limits of the Pune Municipal Corporation along with 22 other villages in various parts of the city.

Balewadi, along with neighbouring areas of Aundh and Baner are planned for development as part of the broader Smart Cities Mission initiated by the Government of India in 2015. The selected area will be developed as a model to be replicated in other parts of the city. [3]

Transport

Balewadi is linked to Pune Municipal Corporation, Pune Cantonment, Chinchwad and Alandi by Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) buses. The Katraj - Dehu Road corridor passes through Balewadi. Balewadi is connected to Pune via Baner Road. There are PMPML buses going to Hinjawadi via Balewadi.

Bus rapid transit is planned from the airport to Balewadi from Pune Municipal Corporation. And the third metro route of Shivaji Nagar to Hinjawadi is going to via Balewadi. [4]

Very soon, the Pune Metro will also run through Balewadi with metro stations planned near NICMAR Institute and Balewadi High Street.

Balewadi is home to the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, which hosts various major sporting events and can hold roughly 20,000 spectators in its athletics stadium.

A museum dedicated to Sachin Tendulkar is also planned in Balewadi. [7]

When the Elite Football League of India was introduced in August 2011, Pune was noted as one of eight cities to be awarded a team for the inaugural season, although the team's games will be played in Balewadi. [8] [9]

Pune Metro is a mass rapid transit system serving the city of Pune, India. The system comprises 3 lines with a combined length of 54.14 km (33.64 mi), of which 21.75 km (13.51 mi) on two lines are operational as of August 2023. The 16.59 km (10.31 mi) Purple line from PCMC Bhavan to Swargate runs on an elevated viaduct between PCMC Bhavan to Range Hills, from where it goes underground. The Aqua line runs from Vanaz to Ramwadi covering a distance of 14.66 km (9.11 mi) on an elevated viaduct. The 23.33 km (14.50 mi) elevated Line 3 will run from the Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park in Hinjawadi via Balewadi to Civil Court. All three lines will align at the Civil Court interchange station.

The Velodrome at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex is an outdoor velodrome in Pune, Maharashtra, India. The surface of the velodrome is made of concrete and the length of the track is 333.33 m or 1,093.6 ft. While the velodrome was a prime venue for the 1994 National Games of India it has never been a place for any major events thereafter, and was left unused. As there were no cycling events at the 2008 Commonwealth Youth Games held at the Shree Shiv Chhatrapati Sports Complex, the velodrome was not used as a competition venue during these Games.

Bhoirwadi is an area located in Hinjawadi Phase-3, Pune, in the state of Maharashtra, India. It is under the jurisdiction of Hinjawadi and Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA). The Rajiv Gandhi Infotech Park Phase-3 and International Tech Park are located in this area. Bhoirwadi is well connected and near Balewadi, Baner, Aundh, Pune. Bhoirwadi used to be a village, but now it has been drastically transformed into an affluent, developed area with multinational companies and residential high-rises.

Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), are the annual national level multidisciplinary grassroot games in India held in January or February for two categories, namely under-17 years school students and under-21 college students. Every year best 1,000 kids will be given an annual scholarship of 5 lakh (US$6,300) for 8 years to prepare them for the international sporting events.
