The Vasantotsav is an annual Indian Classical music, semi classical, folk and light music festival held in Pune. The festival is organized by Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande Pratisthan, Pune, in the memory of the late Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande by inviting respected artists to perform at this event. [1] Nana Patekar is the pillar supporting this entire event. [2] [3]
The festival was started in the year 1985 on a small scale in Mumbai with the support of Nana Patekar. The festival played a key role in the development of Indian music. Later, the festival was conducted in Pune. [4] Vasantotsav celebrated 10th year in 2016.
Many artists have performed in the festival, such as Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, Ustad Zakir Hussain, Shankar Mahadevan, Abida Parveen, Mukul Shivputra, Niladri Kumar, Aman Ali Khan, Ayaan Ali Khan, Swapan Choudary, Roop Kumar Rathod, Ustad Rashid Khan, Ustad Shahid Parvez, Hariharan, Vikku Vinayakram, Kaushiki Chakrabarty, Shiva Mani, Shantanu Moitra, Swanand Kirkire, Pt. Rajan Mishra, Pt. Sajan Mishra, Suresh Wadkar, Daler Mehendi, Teejan Bai and Rahul Deshpande.
The newest artists who performed in 2016 include the Wadali Brothers, Mahesh Kale and George Brooks, among others. [5]
The 2016 Vasantotsav was the 10th year of the event. This year, the event was kept free for the 14000 viewers. The event also consists of 100th show of Katyar Kaljat Ghusali (play). The play (Sangeet Natak)was done by Opera style with complete background of set of Katyar on the big stage. The play run for more than 3 hours with the standing ovation of viewers.
As per the plan, from the year 2016, Vasantotsav would be conducted all over Maharashtra so that people from other cities would also participate in the event. This would be done by Nasik and Nagpur. During Vasantotsav, the viewers donated money which was further given to NAM Foundation of Nana Patekar and Makarand Anaspure who are closely working and supporting farmers of Maharashtra. [6]
The ‘Vasantrao Deshpande Smruti Sanman’ and ‘Vasantrao Deshpande budding artist’ awards are presented to three artists in the categories of senior guru, music researcher, and talented young musician. [7]

The Sawai Gandharva Bhimsen Mahotsav is an annual Indian Classical music festival held in Pune since 1953. The festival is hosted by the Arya Sangeet Prasarak Mandal (ASPM) and initiated by Bhimsen Joshi as a memorial music conference commemorating the life and work of Joshi's guru, Sawai Gandharva, the festival's namesake.
Ganesh Balawant Nawathe, better known as Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki, was an Indian vocalist, composer and scholar of Indian classical, semi-classical, and devotional music. While he distinguished himself in Hindustani music, he is also credited for the revival of the Marathi musical theatre in the 1960s. Jitendra Abhisheki has been praised as being "among the stalwarts of Hindustani classical music who mastered other musical forms such as thumri, tappa, bhajan, and bhavgeet. His work in Marathi natyasangeet is well-known."
Rahul Deshpande is an Indian classical music singer and actor. He is the recipient of a National Film Award for his work in Me Vasantrao. He is the grandson of Vasantrao Deshpande.
The Patiala gharana is one of the vocal gharanas of Hindustani classical music, named after the city of Patiala in Punjab, India where it was established. The gharana was founded in the mid to late 19th century by Mian Kallu, a sārangi player of the Jaipur durbar. He received his musical training from the last Mughal king Bahadur Shah Zafar’s court musician Qutub Bakhsh ‘Tanras’ Khan and went on to become the court musician to the Maharaja of Patiala. Eventually, the mantle was passed on to his son, ‘General’ Ali Baksh Khan and his close friend ‘Colonel’ Fateh Ali Khan, both of whom became court musicians in the court of Maharaja Rajinder Singh. The titles of 'general' and 'colonel' of music were bestowed upon them by the Victor Alexander Bruce, the 9th Earl of Elgin, after the duo had enthralled him with their performance. Their pairing was popularly referred to as 'Ali-a-Fattu ki Jodi.'

Shujaat Husain Khan is one of the most acclaimed North Indian musicians and sitar players of his generation. He belongs to the Imdadkhani gharana school of music. He has recorded over 100 albums and was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best World Music Album for his work with the band Ghazal with Iranian musician Kayhan Kalhor. He also sings frequently. His style of sitar playing, known as gayaki ang, is imitative of the subtleties of the human voice.

Pandit Motiram Pandit Maniram Sangeet Samaroh is an annual Indian classical music festival held at Chowmahalla Palace in Hyderabad, India. The festival is organised by noted classical singer Pt. Jasraj in memory of his father and brother, both classical musicians. Jasraj always performs on 30 November every year, his father's death anniversary and a tribute to Jasraj's guru, his mentor and elder brother, Maniram, who died in 1986, and Jasraj renamed the festival to include his brother's name.
Mahesh Kale is an Indian Classical vocalist renowned for his specialization in Indian Classical (Hindustani), Semi-Classical, Devotional music including Natya Sangeet. Mahesh Kale won the 63rd National Film Award as the Best Playback Singer, for the song Aruni Kirani in the film Katyar Kaljat Ghusli. He is a disciple of Pandit Jitendra Abhisheki. He was ranked nineteenth in The Times of India's Top 20 Most Desirable Men of Maharashtra in 2017.
Abdul Sattar Khan, popularly known as Ustad Tari Khan, is a Pakistani tabla player and vocalist. Tari Khan hails from the Punjab gharana and is the student of Ustad Miyan Shaukat Hussain. He has been awarded with many accolades such as Taj Poshi, the Hazrat Amir Khusrow Award, as well as Pakistan's Pride of Performance Award in 2008. Tari Khan belongs to the tabla playing gharana called the Punjab gharana. Today, he is acknowledged as one of the foremost Tabla players of all time by musicians all over the world.
Swara Samrat festival is a four-day annual festival of Indian classical music and dance held during the winters in Kolkata, India. This festival is the brainchild of Sarod maestro Pandit Tejendra Narayan Majumdar, his vocalist wife, Manasi Majumder and their Sarod player-son Indrayuddh Majumder. The festival is dedicated to Swara Samrat Ustad Ali Akbar Khan. Vidyadhar Oke is an Indian doctor, musicologist, harmonium player, and astrology consultant, who has done research in the use of shrutis (microtones) in Indian classical music and created a unique 22-shruti version of the harmonium.

Katyar Kaljat Ghusali is a 2015 Indian Marathi-language epic musical drama film based on a play by the same name. Directed by Subodh Bhave, the film stars Sachin Pilgaonkar, Shankar Mahadevan, and Subodh Bhave in lead roles. The film marks the directorial debut for Bhave, and the theatrical acting debut for Shankar Mahadevan. The original play, written by Purushottam Darvhekar, premiered in 1967 in Mumbai, where Hindustani classical vocalist Vasantrao Deshpande played one of the protagonists. In 2010, the play was relaunched with protagonists essayed by Rahul Deshpande, grandson of Vasantrao Deshpande and singer Mahesh Kale. The film's music is composed by Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, and retained some of the songs from the original play composed by Jitendra Abhisheki.
Katyar Kaljat Ghusali is a Marathi musical play, originally released in 1967. The play gained such popularity that more than 1,000 shows were staged in a very short period. The play was written by Purushottam Darvhekar. The story depicts clash of two gharanas (schools) of Indian classical music. Pt. Jeetendra Abhisheki composed the padas.
Abhisek Lahiri is an Indian classical sarod player with training in the three major gharanas of sarod which are Shahjahanpur, Maihar gharana, and Senia Bangash (Gwalior) from his father and guru Pt. Alok Lahiri. Primarily he belongs to the Maihar gharana.
