Chaliyar River is the fourth longest river in Kerala at 169 km in length. The Chaliyar is also known as Chulika River, Nilambur River or Beypore River as it is near the sea. Pothukal, Chungathara, Nilambur, Mampad, Edavanna, Kavanoor, Perakamanna, Areekode, Kizhuparamba, Elamaram, Cheekkode, Vazhakkad, Vazhayur, Cheruvadi, Edavannappara, Mavoor, Peruvayal, Feroke and Beypore are some of the towns/villages situated along the banks of the Chaliyar. It mainly flows through Malappuram district. Its tributaries flow through both the districts of Malappuram and Kozhikode. The bank of river Chaliyar in the Nilambur region is also known for its natural Gold fields. Explorations done at the valley of the river Chaliyar in Nilambur have shown reserves of the order of 2.5 million cubic meters of placers with 0.1 gram per cubic meter of gold. It originates at the Ilambaleri hills of Nilgiri Mountains in Nilgiris district, which is also near Wayanad-Malappuram district border. It flows mainly through the erstwhile region of Eranad, and finally empties into the Arabian Sea at Beypore port, opposite to Chaliyam harbour.

Naadan Premam is a Malayalam novel written by S. K. Pottekkatt in 1941. It is a short novel written when the author was in Bombay and tells the story of an innocent village belle jilted by a modern man-about-town. It is set entirely in Mukkam, a rustic village on the banks of the Iruvanjippuzha, a major tributary of River Chaliyar. Written initially as a film treatment and later converted into a novel, it was serialised in Kerala Kaumudi newspaper and released as a book in August 1941. It was adapted into a film of the same name in 1972 but was not a success on the screen.

Balyambra Pottattu Moideen (1937–1982) was an Indian politician, film producer, and publisher from Kerala. He was Praja Socialist Party's youth wing president for Kerala, and was elected member of Mukkam Panchayat in 1979. Moideen published Sports Herald, a Malayalam sports magazine. His debut production was a Malayalam film Nizhale Nee Sakshi in 1977, which also debuted Seema as a lead actress, and focused on the 1976 death of college student P. Rajan following torture in police custody. However, the film was never released. Moideen later produced the films Abhinayam (1981) starring Jayan, and India Nee Sundari.
The Malabar River Festival is a white water kayaking championship held in Kozhikode district, Kerala. Down River Extreme Rays is an important item of the game. The championship is organized by the Kerala Tourism Department, District Tourism Promotion Council and Kozhikode District Panchayat. International players from different countries are also competing in this game. The competitions will be held in the tributaries of the Chaliyar River, Iruvanjippuzha and Chalippuzha. The championship was first held in 2013. The competitions are held in various categories, including slalom, boater cross, downriver, and super final extreme races. It is the only white water kayaking championship in South India. The man who wins the championship is called Rapid Raja and the woman is called Rapid Rani. The kayaking championship begins at Pulikkayam near Kodenchery village.
