Kapi is an extinct primate genus that lived in northern India about 13.8 to 12.5 million years ago during the Miocene. [1] [2] The only species, K. ramnagarensis, was described in 2020 and is known from a complete lower molar. [3] The fossil was discovered in 2015 from Ramnagar, a town in Jammu and Kashmir, for which the species name was created. [4] Though originally identified as member of the gibbons and popularised in the news as the oldest gibbon, [1] it was later reassessed as a pliopithecoid, a group of extinct Old World monkeys. [5]

Discovery

American palaeontologists led by Christopher Gilbert, from the Hunter College of the City University of New York and the American Museum of Natural History, and Indian scientists, Ningthoujam Premjit Singh and Rajeev Patnaik, both from Panjab University, explored the Lower Siwaliks of Ramnagar in Jammu and Kashmir since 2010. [6] A number of animal fossils were collected but the most important was a lower jaw bone (mandible) with three molar teeth attached to it which was found in 2014. [7] The fossil was identified as that of a hitherto primate and was named in 2017 as Ramadapis sahnii. [6] [8]

The team took further exploration of the same area in 2015. One day, as the team took rest, Gilbert noticed a shiny object among a pile of dirt on the ground. [9] As he dug up, the object was a molar tooth, as he reported, "We knew immediately it was a primate tooth, but it did not look like the tooth of any of the primates previously found in the area." [7] However, the identification was difficult and only after five years, they were able to identify it as belonging to extinct gibbons. They reported the discovery in the Proceedings of the Royal Society B on 8 September 2020. [3]

Etymology

The generic name Kapi is from the Hindi term for a monkey or ape. [3] The specific name is after Ramnagar, where the type specimen was found. [3]

Features

Kapi is known only from a single tooth. The specimen is a right lower third molar. It shows low crown and generally smaller and narrower than those of other gibbons. The tooth structure indicates that it was a fruit-eating primate. [3]

Reassessment

The original report concluded that "if one considers Yuanmoupithecus a stem hylobatid, Kapi is equally if not more likely to be one as well, making it the earliest known hylobatid in the fossil record." [3] Yuanmoupithecus is a gibbon fossil discovered from China in 2006, [10] dated to 6 to 8 million years old. [11] Better fossils were later discovered and reanalysed in 2022 which supported reclassification of Kapi as a pliopithecoid. [2]

Fossil remains of animals now assigned to this genus, dated from 12.2 million years old in the Miocene, have been found since the 19th century in the Siwalik Hills of the Indian subcontinent as well as in Kutch. Any one of the species in this genus may have been the ancestor to the modern orangutans.

<i>Aegyptopithecus</i> Extinct single-species genus of primate

Aegyptopithecus is an early fossil catarrhine that predates the divergence between hominoids (apes) and cercopithecids. It is known from a single species, Aegyptopithecus zeuxis, which lived around 38-29.5 million years ago in the early part of the Oligocene epoch. It likely resembled modern-day New World monkeys, and was about the same size as a modern howler monkey, which is about 56 to 92 cm long. Aegyptopithecus fossils have been found in the Jebel Qatrani Formation of modern-day Egypt. Aegyptopithecus is believed to be a stem-catarrhine, a crucial link between Eocene and Miocene fossils.

Oligopithecus is a fossil primate that lived in Africa during the Early Oligocene. It is represented by one species, Oligopithecus savagei, known from one jaw bone found in Egypt.

Lufengpithecus is an extinct genus of ape, known from the Late Miocene of East Asia. It is known from thousands of dental remains and a few skulls and probably weighed about 50 kg (110 lb). It contains three species: L. lufengensis, L. hudienensis and L. keiyuanensis. Lufengpithecus lufengensis is from the Late Miocene found in China, named after the Lufeng site and dated around 6.2 Ma. Lufengpithecus is either thought to be the sister group to Ponginae, or the sister to the clade containing Ponginae and Homininae.

<i>Elephas hysudricus</i> Extinct species of mammal

Elephas hysudricus is an extinct elephant species known from the Pleistocene of Asia. It is thought to be ancestral to the living Asian elephant, from which it is distinguished by the molar teeth having a lower crown height and a lower lamellae number. Remains of the species are primarily known from the Indian subcontinent, with the most important remains coming from the Siwalik Hills. The oldest remains of the species in the Siwaliks are placed at around 2.6 million year ago at the beginning of the Early Pleistocene, with the youngest dates in the Siwaliks during the Middle Pleistocene around 0.6 million years ago, though it likely persisted on the subcontinent later than this based on remains found elsewhere. Remains likely attributable to the species are also known from the Levant in Israel and Jordan, dating to the late Middle Pleistocene, likely sometime between 500-100,000 years ago. Isotopic analysis of specimens from the Indian subcontinent suggests that early members of the species were likely primarily grazers, but shifted towards mixed feeding after the arrival of the substantially larger elephant species Palaeoloxodon namadicus to the region. It is suggested to be closely related and possibly ancestral to the extinct Elephas hysudrindicus from the Pleistocene of Java in Indonesia.

Many Anapithecus fossils come from the site of Rudabánya, in northern Hungary, where Anapithecus lived alongside the ape Rudapithecus. The only species in the genus, Anapithecus hernyaki, is named after Gabor Hernyák, chief geologist of the Iron Ore Works of Rudabánya.

Epipliopithecus vindobonensis is an extinct species of pliopithecoid primate recovered from the Middle Miocene deposits of Devínska Nová Ves fissure in western Slovakia. Epipliopithecus is one of the few pliopithecoids for which both cranial and post-cranial fossil material has been recovered. Most pliopithecoids are known only from fossilized teeth, whereas Epipliopithecus is known from three nearly complete skeletons. As such, Epipliopithecus has greatly informed the modern understanding of pliopithecoid anatomy, locomotion, and phylogeny.

Ramadapis sahnii was a primitive primate belonging to Sivaladapidae that existed around 11 to 14 million years ago. Only a mandible was found at the dig site, which was near Ramnagar in Udhampur district in Jammu and Kashmir specifically the lower Siwalik deposits. The jawbone indicates that Ramadapis resembled a modern day ring-tailed lemur. The early lemur was named after Ashok Sahni, who discovered the first sivaladapid in the Siwalik deposits. The mandible was only around one and a quarter inch long, which led scientists to assume that it was only around 11 pounds.

Yuanmoupithecus is an extinct genus of gibbons that lived 8.2 to 7.1 million years ago during the late Miocene. As of 2022, it is the oldest gibbon known. The fossils, mainly of teeth, were discovered from Yuanmou, Yunnan Province, China. The type species is Y. xiaoyuan, described by Yuerong Pan in 2006.

Laomaki is a genus of adapiform primate that lived during the Early Oligocene in Asia, containing only the species Laomaki yunnanensis. It was described from a right maxilla fragment. Its molars and premolars are somewhat similar to those of Rencunius and Anthradapis respectively. Its placement within the family Sivaladapidae is uncertain; it has not been placed in a subfamily. It has been found at sites in Jammu and Kashmir and Yunnan, having lived around the time of the Eocene–Oligocene transition.
