Karimganj is a town in the Karimganj District of the Indian state of Assam. It is the administrative headquarters of the district.

Karimganj town is located at 24°52′N92°21′E / 24.87°N 92.35°E / 24.87; 92.35 . [2] The area of Karimganj Town is 16.09 km2. It has an average elevation of 13 metres (42 feet).

Demographics

Bengali and Meitei (Manipuri) are the official languages of this place. [3] [4]

As per as the official census of 2011, Karimganj Town had a population of 56,854 of which 28,473 are males while 28,381 are females. Children in the age group of 0 to 6 years were 4,946. Karimganj had a literacy rate of 86.35%, out of which male literacy was 87.91% and female literacy was 84.78%. The sex ratio is 996. There were 12,234 households as of 2011. [5] [6]

The Barak Valley is the southernmost region and administrative division of the Indian state of Assam. It is named after the Barak river. The Barak valley consists of three administrative districts of Assam namely - Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi. The main and largest city is Silchar, which seats the headquarter of Cachar district and also serves as administrative divisional office of Barak valley division. The valley is bordered by Mizoram and Tripura to the south, Bangladesh and Meghalaya to the west and Manipur to the east respectively. Once North Cachar Hills was a part of Cachar district which became a subdivision in 1951 and eventually a separate district. Ramkrishna Nagar, most commonly known as R.K Nagar, is a small municipality township situated around 47km from Karimganj, India. The topography of the area comprises undulating hillocks. It is well connected by bus service from Karimganj and shared taxis run by private operators.

Ram Prasad Sarmah is an Indian National Congress Assam Pradesh politician from Assam.Earlier in 2014, he was contested from Bharatiya Janata Party from Tezpur Loksabha Constituency. He is the current President of Assam Gorkha Sammelan. He is an advocate at the Gauhati High Court, and has been fielded as the candidate from the Tezpur constituency by his party in the 2014 Indian general election which he won. He did his Bachelor of Laws From Tura Law College in 1980-81 and Bachelor of Arts From Mendipathar College in 1976.

Algapur (Pron:/ˈalɡəˈpʊə/) is a town and Tehsil or Block in Hailakandi district in the state of Assam, India. It is located 32 km from District headquarters Hailakandi.
