Lego Ghostbusters (stylized as LEGO Ghostbusters) is a Lego theme based on the Ghostbusters franchise created by Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. It is licensed from Columbia Pictures and Ghost Corps (Sony Pictures). [2] [3] The Lego Ghostbusters theme was first introduced in 2014. The first set [4] [5] was released in June 2014 as part of the Lego Ideas theme (formerly known as Lego Cuusoo). [6] [7] Later, a set based on the Ghostbusters' firehouse [8] was released and one set based on the Ghostbusters: Answer the Call . [9] The Lego Group also used this license for character and level packs in the Lego Dimensions toys-to-life video game. [10] [11] In 2018, a set was released as part of the Lego BrickHeadz theme. In 2020, another set [12] was released in November 2020 and based on Ghostbusters: Afterlife film. [lower-alpha 1]

Overview

Lego Ghostbusters is based on the Ghostbusters franchise. The product line focuses on the Ghostbusters characters who start a ghost-catching business in New York City. Lego Ghostbusters aimed to recreate the main characters in Lego form, including Peter Venkman, Ray Stantz, Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore. [14] [15]

Development

Lego Ghostbusters began with the release of a user-designed construction set based on the Ectomobile (or Ecto-1), the vehicle that features in the films. The design was submitted to Lego Cuusoo by Australian video game artist Brent Waller. The design achieved 10,000 votes, after which it was selected for production. It was chosen for having "broad worldwide appeal and the fact that the model lends itself to challenging and creative building for both children and adult fans". The set was produced to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the original 1984 film. [16]

Lego Ghostbusters was inspired by the Ghostbusters film franchise. The Lego construction toy range is based on the film franchise and developed in collaboration with Sony Pictures Consumer Products. The construction sets were designed to recreate the story and characters of the film series in Lego form. [17]

Construction sets

According to Bricklink, The Lego Group released a total of 3 Lego sets as part of Lego Ghostbusters theme. [1]

The Lego Ghostbusters theme was launched at the New York Toy Fair in 2014. [18] Following the successful campaign by Brent Waller for the Lego Cuusoo idea, The Lego Group released the first construction toy set based on the film. Ghostbusters Ecto-1 (set number: 21108) was based on the Ectomobile from the Ghostbusters franchise and was released in June 2014. The release of the set coincided with the 30th anniversary of the original 1984 Ghostbusters film on 7 June 2014. [18] [19] The set included Lego minifigures of Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Egon Spengler and Winston Zeddemore. It also included paranormal detection equipment, a removable roof and a tracking computer. [20] [21] The Lego Group announced the Ghostbusters Ecto-1 (set number: 21108) was retired by the end of 2016. [22]

In 2016, Firehouse Headquarters (set number: 75827) a second set based on the Ghostbusters' firehouse was released in January 2016. Firehouse Headquarters (set number: 75827) was the largest set. [23] [24] [25] The set contained 4634 pieces with nine minifigures and was recommended for builders with an age rating of 16+. [26] [27] [21] The Firehouse Headquarters had nine rooms including a laboratory, containment unit, darkroom, garage bay, office area, kitchen, sleeping quarters, bathroom and recreation room. [28] [29] The set featured opening walls for easy play access. [30] The doors of the Firehouse Headquarters could open to fit the Ghostbusters Ecto-1(set number: 21108) inside. [31] The set included three ghost figures of Slimer, Pink Ghost and Blue Ghost. [32] The Lego Group announced the Firehouse Headquarters (set number: 75827) was retired by the end of 2018. [33]

Later, Ecto-1 & 2 (set number: 75828) based on Ghostbusters: Answer the Call film was released in July 2016. [34] Ecto-1 & 2 (set number: 75828) [35] [36] was the third set. The set featured the Ecto-1 vehicle, Ecto-2 motorbike and five minifigures [37] [38] with a ghost figure. [39] [40] The set contained 556 pieces and was recommended for builders with an age rating of 8–14. [41] [42] [43] [44] The set included Lego minifigures of Abby Yates, Erin Gilbert, Jillian Holtzmann, Patty Tolan, Kevin and along with Mayhem ghost figure. It also included removable roof with paranormal detection equipment, 4 proton packs, proton sidearm, an ion shield gun, PKE Meter, 2 traps and a toolbox. [21] The Lego Group announced the Ecto-1 & 2 (set number: 75828) was retired by the end of 2017. [45]

In 2020, it was announced that the ECTO-1 (set number: 10274) [46] [47] [48] based on the Ghostbusters: Afterlife film was released on 15 November 2020. [49] The set contains 2352 pieces and is recommended for builders with an age rating of 18+. It also included working steering, trapdoor with ghost trap, an extending gunner seat, a moving ghost sniffer and paranormal detection equipment. [50] [51] [52] In addition, a Ghostbusters Afterlife poster was included as a free gift. [53] Lego designer Michael Psiaki explained, “I love creating LEGO vehicles, and having previously designed the LEGO James Bond Aston Martin DB5, I loved the challenge of working on the ECTO-1. This is the largest and most detailed version of this car that we have ever created. It is crammed full of authentic features and easter eggs that I’m excited for builders to discover as they put this model together.” [54]

Lego BrickHeadz sets

Peter Venkman & Slimer (set number: 41622) [55] [56] [57] was released on 1 July 2018 as part of the Lego BrickHeadz theme and based on the original 1984 Ghostbusters film. [58] The set consists of 228 pieces and 2 baseplates. [59] [60] The set included Peter Venkman's Proton pack and Slimer's hot dogs. [61]

Video games

Lego Dimensions

The crossover toys-to-life game Lego Dimensions (2015) [62] [63] [64] developed by Traveller's Tales features content based on both the original Ghostbusters and its 2016 remake. [65] A "level pack" [66] includes an additional level that recreates the events of the original film and adds Peter Venkman [lower-alpha 2] as a playable character, with the unlockable ability to play as the other three Ghostbusters. A "story pack" [69] [70] offers an extended six-level story campaign retelling the events of the 2016 film, and includes a playable Abby Yates, [71] [72] [lower-alpha 3] who can also be used to play as the other three Ghostbusters. Additional "fun packs" [73] [74] add Slimer [75] and Stay Puft [76] as playable characters. [77]

Lego Legacy: Heroes Unboxed

The crossover online game Lego Legacy: Heroes Unboxed (2020), developed by Gameloft [78] [79] and released exclusively for Microsoft Windows, Android and iOS devices on 27 February 2020, [80] [81] [82] includes Peter Venkman, [83] Ray Stanz, [84] Egon Spengler, Winston Zeddemore and Slimer [85] as playable characters. They are the first licensed characters in the game. [85]

Reception

The Ghostbusters Ecto-1 (set number: 10274) was well received by David Cartlidge for Blocks magazine, who rated it 95/100 and opined that, "the finished vehicle is a perfect rendition of the source material and the complex curves, lines and fins of this classic vehicle are recreated masterfully." Lego <i>Harry Potter</i> Lego theme based on the Harry Potter film series

Lego Harry Potter is a Lego theme based on the film series of the same name and the eponymous novels by British author J. K. Rowling. It is licensed from Warner Bros. Lego models of important scenes, vehicles and characters were made for the first six films and all of the published books. The first sets appeared in 2001, to coincide with the release of the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. Subsequent sets were released alongside the new films, until Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. The line then went dormant for three years, with sets being released in 2010 and 2011. In 2018, it was announced that more sets based on the Harry Potter franchise would be released, including new sets based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them and its sequel, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald.

The first four sets were released on December 30, 2009, with an additional two sets being released on January 4, 2010. In May, five Lego and four Duplo sets were released under the Toy Story 3 sub-theme. For the release of Toy Story 4 there was one Duplo set based on the third film and 6 Lego sets based on the fourth film. These sets were released in March and in April 2019 this time under the Juniors line. The minifigures in the sets were also now redesigned.

Lego Minifigures are a 2010 Lego theme based on a set of collectible Lego minifigures. Each figure is an original character with new clothing and facial designs, and many contain previously unseen accessories. Each series usually contains 16 different minifigures; however, some series contain as few as 9 minifigures, while others contain up to 22. Since 2021, the number of different minifigures for a series is set to 12. In 2023, the Disney 100-anniversary series came out, bringing the total number of figures to 18, although it was once again reduced to 12 with the second Marvel series. This series also introduced paper boxes, instead of the plastic bags, making it no longer possible to feel up the pieces for each figure.

Lego Super Heroes is a theme and product range of the Lego construction toy, introduced in 2011, owned by The Lego Group and licensed from DC Entertainment, Marvel Entertainment, Warner Bros., The Walt Disney Company and Pixar.

Lego Disney is a Lego theme based on the various Disney Princesses and Disney characters involved in different Disney films and television series. It is licensed from Walt Disney Pictures. The theme was first introduced in 2016 and was re-branded theme from the Lego Disney Princess line in 2017. The toy line was accompanied by several shorts and television specials based on Lego Disney.

Lego Juniors was a product range of the construction toy Lego, designed for children aged 4 to 7 years old. It acted as a transition from the Duplo to the regular Lego System. Lego Juniors initial release was on February 14, 2014, with the tagline Easy to build. It was the successor to the Bricks & More line released in 2009. Unlike its predecessor, Lego Juniors offered specialized bricks to make builds look more realistic while using fewer pieces for an easier build. The product line was discontinued by the end of 2018 and rebranded as "4+".

Lego Hidden Side was a Lego theme that was first introduced in August 2019. It took place in the fictional city of "Newbury" and linked Lego playsets to an app of the same name, which was used to hunt, capture and collect ghosts via augmented reality. The series came on the market in 2019 and, after the discontinued Lego Dimensions and Nexo Knights series, represented another attempt by The Lego Group to link digital and real game worlds. It was accompanied by the Lego Hidden Side webisode series and a television special, which was released on the Lego YouTube channel, and on Cartoon Network. The product line was discontinued by the end of 2020.

The Lego Movie is a Lego product line based on the 2014 film of the same name. It was licensed from The Lego Group and Warner Bros. Animation. The theme was first introduced in 2014 to coincide with the release of the film, along with The Lego Movie Video Game. Further sets were produced to coincide with the release of the second film in The Lego Movie franchise, titled The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part. The product line was discontinued by the end of 2019.
