Maninagar is an area of Ahmedabad city, Gujarat, India. It is located in the southern part of the city and an important area of the city. It can be divided into two regions - Maninagar East and Maninagar West, separated by the Maninagar Railway Station.

Narendra Modi who was also the Chief Minister of the Gujarat State Government had represented this constituency as a Member of the Legislative Assembly till 21 May 2014, when he resigned as Gujarat CM for the position of Prime Minister of India and also resigned as Maninagar MLA.

History

Maninagar is originally a Land that belonged to Seth Maneklal Manilal, a powerful banker. He donated a big piece of this land to develop the first organized settlement outside the walled city. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel created the first town planning scheme for Manipur, now called Maninagar. [1] [2]

Cityscape

The Kankaria lake and Nagina Wadi are situated in this area. This area also hosts a train station on the Ahmedabad-Mumbai line where most of the major trains stop.

Maninagar is also the entrance to the Ahmedabad-Vadodara expressway.


Sports

Transtadia Stadium is built near Kankaria, which has become a hub for many sporting events. Arena located there is the home stadium for Gujarat Giants of Pro-Kabbadi League.

Physical Ground is a multi-sports stadium situated in Khokhra. It was inaugurated in the year 2010. The stadium serves place to play sports like cricket, football, badminton, chess, wrestling, judo, and basketball.

It was one of the centers for Khel-Maha-kumbh that was held in 2011 by Government of Gujarat.

Kankaria Lake is the second largest lake in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. It is located in the south-eastern part of the city, in the Maninagar area. It was completed in 1451 during the reign of Sultan Qutb-ud-Din Ahmad Shah II though its origin is placed in the Chaulukya period sometimes. A lakefront is developed around it, which has many public attractions such as a zoo, toy train, kids city, tethered balloon ride, water rides, water park, food stalls, and entertainment facilities. The lakefront was revamped in 2007–2008. Kankaria Carnival is a week-long festival held here in the last week of December. Many cultural, art, and social activities are organised during the carnival.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium is an Indian sports stadium located in the Navrangpura locality of Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It is sometimes referred as Sports Club of Gujarat Stadium. The stadium holds the honor of hosting the first One Day International match played in India. Once a new stadium of the same name came up in Motera in 1982, the Sardar (Vallabhbhai) Patel stadium hasn't been used for international cricket matches. EKA Arena is a multi-purpose stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, located near Kankaria Lake. The stadium was completed by and officially opened on 7 October 2016. It was built in a public-private partnership between the Government of Gujarat and SE TransStadia, a company led by entrepreneur Udit Sheth.

There have been many successful and popular initiatives undertaken by the authority to encourage the sports culture in Gujarat, 'Khel Mahakumbh' being an example. Gujarat has various levels of sports competitions including events of both larger and smaller scales.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave is a under-construction sports enclave being built in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. Once the sports enclave is fully built, it will be one of the largest of its kind in India. The project is being jointly executed with the Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority, and the Government of Gujarat. A primary reason for the sports enclave to be built, is so that the Summer Olympic Games, and other major sporting events could be hosted in India in the future.
