The 10 states and 3 administrative areas of South Sudan are divided into 79 counties. [1] [2]
Before the independence of South Sudan from Sudan, the Counties were known as Districts. Upon Independence in 2011, the 10 states of South Sudan were divided into 79 counties. More counties were established during the South Sudanese Civil War, when the country increased to 32 states, and the number of counties exceeded 100. However, with the return to 10 states and 3 administrative areas in 2020, South Sudan reverted to 79 counties. [2]
The Bahr el Ghazal is a region of northwestern South Sudan. Its name came from the river Bahr el Ghazal. The name translates as "sea of gazelles" from Arabic.
The Province of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan, formerly known as the Episcopal Church of Sudan, is a province of the Anglican Communion located in South Sudan. The province consists of eight Internal Provinces and 61 dioceses. The current archbishop and primate is Justin Badi Arama. It received the current naming after the inception of the Province of the Episcopal Church of Sudan, on 30 July 2017.
Tonj, located in Warrap State, Bahr el Ghazal in South Sudan, is a historically rich and unique town. It is known by various names, including Kalkuel, Genanyuon, Jurkatac, Madiera, BaburWasaka, Genngeu, and Tonjdit. The town is bordered by Rumbek, Cueibet, Yambio, Bentiu, and Gokrial.
Lt Gen Dominic Dim Deng was a senior member of the Sudan People's Liberation Army, a distinguished military veteran general and the first defence minister in the Government of Southern Sudan who lost his life alongside his wife Madam Josephine Apieu Jenaro Aken, senior politician Dr. Justin Yac Arop and 18 other Sudan People's Liberation Army and Government of Southern Sudan officials on a leased CEM Air Beechcraft 1900 that crashed 375 km west of Juba, Sudan on May 2, 2008.
Aweil East County, is a county in South Sudan.
Aweil State was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020. It was located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it borders Gogrial to the east, Lol to the west, Aweil East to the north, and Wau to the south. Its capital and largest city was Aweil.
Aweil East also known as Abiem, was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020.It had an estimated population of 571,728 people and an area of 6,172.23 KM square. It was located in northern-western South Sudan. Its capital and largest city was Wanyjok. The state is located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it bordered Twic State and Gogrial State to the east, Aweil State to the south, Lol State to the west, the disputed Abyei State region to the northeast, and Sudan to the north.
Wau State was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020. It was located in the Bahr el Ghazal region, and was part of the former state of Western Bahr el Ghazal. Wau State bordered Aweil State, Gbudwe State, Gogrial State, Lol State, and Tonj State.
Twic State was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020. It was located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it bordered Aweil East to the west, the disputed Abyei region to the north, Gogrial to the south, Northern Liech to the east, and Ruweng to the northeast. The population of Twic State was recorded at 204,905 in 2008, and was estimated at a population of 543,410 in 2014. The capital of the state was Mayen-Abun, with an estimated population of around 2,000 people in city limits.
Gogrial State was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020. It was located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it bordered Twic to the north, Aweil East to the northwest, Aweil to the west, Wau to the southwest, Tonj to the southeast, and Northern Liech to the northeast.
Eastern Lakes State was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020. It was located in the Bahr el Ghazal region and it bordered Southern Liech to the north, Western States to the west, Amadi to the southwest, Terekeka to the southeast, and Jonglei to the east.
Northern Liech was a state in South Sudan that existed between 2 October 2015 and 22 February 2020. It was located in the Greater Upper Nile region and it bordered Ruweng to the north, Western Bieh to the east, Southern Liech to the south, Tonj to the south, and Gogrial and Twic to the west.
Before the independence of South Sudan from Sudan, the 10 states of Southern Sudan were divided into districts. These districts have been superseded by counties.
Baidit is a Payam in Bor West County, in Jonglei State, South Sudan. It is situated on the east side of the Bahr al Jabal River a short distance north of Bor, South Sudan. Baidit is the county headquarters for Bor West County.
Jalle is a Payam in Bor North County, in Jonglei State, South Sudan. It is situated on the east side of the Bahr al Jabal River between Bor and Twic East.
Tonj North County is an administrative area in Warrap State, South Sudan.
Tonj East County is an administrative area in Warrap State, South Sudan.
Tonj South County is an administrative area in Warrap State, South Sudan.
Yirol East County is a county in Lakes State, South Sudan. The county borders Panyijar County in the North, Rumbek East County in the North west, Yirol West County in the west, Awerial County in the south, Bor South County in the south east and Twic East County in the east.
Isaiah Kulang Mabor DengDak Anguany was a South Sudanese politician who was Minister for Communications, Transport and Roads and member of the People's Regional Assembly, in the capital of Juba, serving as Speaker of the House between 1979 and 1980. Kulang was a prominent member of the Southern Front by then and in the late 1980s he participated actively in founding the United Sudan African Party (USAP).
