The 1930 Graf Zeppelin stamps were a set of three airmail postage stamps, each depicting the image of the Graf Zeppelin , issued by the United States Post Office Department in 1930, exclusively for delivery of mail carried aboard that airship. Although the stamps were valid for postage on mail sent on the Zeppelin Pan American flight from Germany to the United States, via Brazil, the set was marketed to collectors and was largely intended to promote the route. 93.5% of the revenue generated by the sale of these stamps went to the Zeppelin Airship Works in Germany. [1] The Graf Zeppelin stamps were issued as a gesture of goodwill toward Germany. [2] The three stamps were used briefly and then withdrawn from sale. The remainder of the stock was destroyed by the Post Office Department. Due to the high cost of the stamps during the Great Depression, most collectors and the general public could not afford them. Consequently, only about 227,000 of the stamps were sold, just 7% of the total printed, making them relatively scarce and prized by collectors. [3] [4]
In 1928 the Graf Zeppelin debuted and set new long-distance airship records. [5] [6] In honor of its achievements, the Zeppelin Company planned for the Graf Zeppelin to fly to Rio de Janeiro. [7] [note 1]
In an agreement with The German Zeppelin Airship Works and as a goodwill gesture toward Germany, [2] the United States Post Office produced a set of three airmail postage stamps that commemorated the Graf Zeppelin and the coming transatlantic flight, which were used to pay the postage for mail carried aboard the Zeppelin, a rigid airship that was over 775 feet (236 m) long. Mail would be carried and delivered from Germany to points in North and South America and back again. [1]
The three stamps all featured the Graf Zeppelin in various configurations. All three stamps were first issued in Washington, D.C., on April 19, 1930, one month before the historic trans-Atlantic first flight was made. [9] [10] The stamps were placed on sale at other selected post offices on April 21, 1930. [11]
The Graf Zeppelin departed from Friedrichshafen, Germany on May 30, 1930, and returned on June 6. The 65-cent and $1.30 values were used to pay postage for postcards and letters, respectively, that were carried on the last leg of the journey from the United States to Seville, Spain and Friedrichshafen. The $1.30 and $2.60 stamps paid the postage for postcards and letters, respectively, that were carried on the round trip flight via Friedrichshafen or Seville. [11] The round trip letter rate was $3.90, the exact amount which could be paid with the $2.60 and $1.30 stamps. [4] Mail franked with the Zeppelin stamps was forwarded to Germany by boat where it was picked up at Friedrichshafen and put aboard the Graf Zeppelin. The week-long flight of the Graf Zeppelin extended from Germany to Brazil and on to the United States and then returned to Friedrichshafen. [9] [11]
The stamps were printed by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which had only six weeks to design, print and distribute the issues to customers for use on mail to Germany in time for the departing flight. [10] However, the U.S. Post Office would receive only a small profit of 6.5% of the stamps' denomination for letters that would actually be carried aboard the Graf Zeppelin. The German Zeppelin Airship Works would receive most of the profit for those stamps that were actually used to pay postage and were carried by their airship. The U.S. Post Office agreed to issue the stamps anticipating that most of the stamps sold would be to stamp collectors eager to add the new stamps to their stamp collections, and consequently would be retaining all of the revenue generated from those sales. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing created plates of two hundred postage stamps divided into four panes of fifty stamps each. [10] The panes were perforated with 11 gauge perforations. [12] Because a margin (selvage) of paper extended around all four sides of each pane there are no stamps with straight edges.
A total of 1,000,000 of each denomination were printed, [11] but only 227,260 stamps in all were sold, or 7% of the total. [1] The Zeppelin stamps were withdrawn from sale on June 30, 1930, [12] and the remaining stocks were destroyed by the Post Office Department. [9] [11]
The set of three stamps shared a common border design inscribed with the words GRAF ZEPPELIN (first row) and EUROPE – PAN AMERICAN FLIGHT (second row) in upper case letters near the top of the border, and with the words UNITED STATES POSTAGE, also in upper case, along the bottom border. The stamps were printed in different colors for each denomination. The attractive stamps were highly publicized but were considered controversial among some collectors and others who refused to purchase these issues, complaining that the Post Office was charging too much while at the same time trying to drive up the demand for these stamps by destroying the unsold issues. The $4.55 face value for the set of three stamps was a significant amount of money during the Great Depression. However, over time, these stamps increased in popularity. They became highly sought after by stamp and postal history collectors and remain so today. [1] [10]
The green 65-cent stamp depicts the Graf Zeppelin flying eastward over the Atlantic Ocean. Like the other two denominations, its inscription along the top reads GRAF ZEPPELIN – EUROPE PAN AMERICAN FLIGHT, and UNITED STATES POSTAGE along the bottom. The lowest of the three denominations, this issue paid the post card rate. [9] The Scott catalog number [note 2] for this issue is C13. Out of 1,000,000 stamps printed, [11] 93,336 were sold. [14]
The $1.30 stamp was first issued in Washington, D.C., on April 19, 1930. The stamp was printed in brown and depicts the Graf Zeppelin flying westward, superimposed over a map of the continents of Europe and South and North America with the names of various cities shown. This issue paid the postcard and letter rates on the May 1930 Pan American flight that departed from Germany, flying to Brazil and then the United States. Postage rates depended on the distance between points along the route. [10] The Scott catalog number for this issue is C14. Out of 1,000,000 stamps printed, [11] only 72,428 were sold. [14]
The blue $2.60 stamp depicts the Graf Zeppelin among clouds, superimposed over a globe and traveling toward the west. This issue was designed by C. A. Huston and A. R. Meissner. [4] The Scott catalog number for this issue is C15. Out of 1,000,000 stamps printed, [11] only 61,296 were sold. [14]
The Graf Zeppelin stamps of 1930 were issued in sheets of fifty. Each sheet had a "plate number" inscribed in the margin of the sheet. [3]
A 50-cent Zeppelin stamp, often referred to by collectors as the "Baby Zeppelin", was released October 2, 1933, for the Century of Progress exhibition, of which 324,700 were issued. It should not be confused with the Zeppelin stamps that were issued in 1930. [15] With a far higher number available to collectors, it is also considerably less expensive than the 1930 issues. [16]
Over a five-year period the Graf Zeppelin and Hindenburg flew scheduled airmail flights delivering mail across the Atlantic Ocean between the United States and points in Europe. At the time conventional fix-wing aircraft were not yet readily available where they could be used to fly such a distance on a regular basis. [17]
Mail flown by the Graf Zeppelin airship received special cancellations and cachets. The two of the covers covers depicted below made the complete round trip, bearing all three Zeppelin stamps attached to a 5-cent Air Post envelope that received special hand-stamped cachets. The diamond shaped cachet depicts a map showing the route used by the Graf Zeppelin on its first flight, and a red cancellation specially made to cancel mail it carried, bearing the name of and used in Friedrichshafen, along with an image of the Zeppelin. [18] The great cost of the famous round the world flight of 1929 was offset by the abundance of souvenir mail carried by the Graf Zeppelin. A U.S. stamped letter flown on the entire round trip from Lakehurst, New Jersey back to Lakehurst required $3.55 (equivalent to $56 in 2021) in postage, which is the total amount of the three zeppelin stamps issued in 1930 thereafter. A postage stamp is a small piece of paper issued by a post office, postal administration, or other authorized vendors to customers who pay postage. Then the stamp is affixed to the face or address-side of any item of mail—an envelope or other postal cover —which they wish to send. The item is then processed by the postal system, where a postmark or cancellation mark—in modern usage indicating date and point of origin of mailing—is applied to the stamp and its left and right sides to prevent its reuse. Next the item is delivered to its addressee.
Postal service in the United States began with the delivery of stampless letters whose cost was borne by the receiving person, later encompassed pre-paid letters carried by private mail carriers and provisional post offices, and culminated in a system of universal prepayment that required all letters to bear nationally issued adhesive postage stamps.
This is a survey of the postage stamps and postal history of Iceland. Regular mail service in Iceland was first established by a charter of 13 May 1776, and on 1 January 1873, Iceland issued its first postage stamps. The design was the same as for the Danish numeral issue of the time, denominated with values ranging from 2 to 16 skilling, and inscribed ÍSLAND. All are scarce or rare, and used copies are especially hard to find.
Postal history is the study of postal systems and how they operate and, or, the study of the use of postage stamps and covers and associated postal artifacts illustrating historical episodes in the development of postal systems. The term is attributed to Robson Lowe, a professional philatelist, stamp dealer and stamp auctioneer, who made the first organised study of the subject in the 1930s and described philatelists as "students of science", but postal historians as "students of humanity". More precisely, philatelists describe postal history as the study of rates, routes, markings, and means.
An airmail stamp is a postage stamp intended to pay either an airmail fee that is charged in addition to the surface rate, or the full airmail rate, for an item of mail to be transported by air.
Zeppelin mail was mail carried on zeppelins, the German airships that saw civilian use from 1908 to 1939. Almost every zeppelin flight carried mail, sometimes in large quantities; the covers usually received special postmarks, and a number of nations issued postage stamps specifically intended for use on mail carried by the zeppelins.
Aerophilately is the branch of philately that specializes in the study of airmail. Philatelists have observed the development of mail transport by air from its beginning, and all aspects of airmail service have been extensively studied and documented by specialists.
In philately, the term cover pertains to the outside of an envelope or package with an address, typically with postage stamps that have been cancelled and is a term generally used among stamp and postal history collectors. The term does not include the contents of the letter or package, although they may add interest to the item if still present. Cover collecting plays an important role in postal history as many covers bear stamps, postmarks and other markings along with names and addresses all of which help to place a cover at a given time and place in history.
A philatelic cover is an envelope prepared with a stamp(s) and address and sent through the mail delivery system for the purpose of creating a collectible item. Stamp collectors began to send mail to each other and to themselves early on, and philatelic mail is known from the late 19th century onward. While some collectors specialize in philatelic covers, especially first day covers and cacheted covers, others regard them as contrived objects that are not reflective of real-world usage, and often will pay a higher price for a cover that represents genuine commercial use. However, mail sent by stamp collectors is no less a genuine article of postage than is mail sent with no concern of seeing the mailed item again. Philatelic covers include mail from first airmail flight and first day of stamp issues ceremonies. Over the years there have been numerous Expositions where special postmarks are made and where a post office is set up where mail can be sent from on the given date of the Expo'. Like any other genuine item of mail these covers include postage stamps and postmarks of the time period and were processed and delivered by an official postal system. Often a philatelic cover will have more historical significance than randomly mailed covers as philatelic covers are also often mailed from the location on the date of an important or noteworthy event, like an inauguration or a space launch.
LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was a German passenger-carrying hydrogen-filled rigid airship that flew from 1928 to 1937. It offered the first commercial transatlantic passenger flight service. The ship was named after the German airship pioneer Ferdinand von Zeppelin, a count in the German nobility. It was conceived and operated by Hugo Eckener, the chairman of Luftschiffbau Zeppelin.
Postage stamps and postal history of the Canal Zone is a subject that covers the postal system, postage stamps used and mail sent to and from the Panama Canal Zone from 1904 up until October 1978, after the United States relinquished its authority of the Zone in compliance with the treaty it reached with Panama.
Art Deco stamps are postage stamps designed in the Art Deco style, which was a popular international design style in the 1920s through the 1930s. The style is marked by the use of "geometric motifs, curvilinear forms, sharply defined outlines, often bold colors", and a fascination with machinery and modernity. This style strongly influenced contemporary architecture, furniture, industrial design, books and posters. Art Deco was named for after 1925 exhibit in Paris Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes. to which the American Topical Association has devoted a lengthy video. The exhibit lasted from April to October 1925 and displayed numerous objects in the new style. Examples of the style, however, are also found in the early twenties.
With the advent of robotic and human spaceflight a new era of American history had presented itself. Keeping with the tradition of honoring the country's history on U.S. postage stamps, the U.S. Post Office began commemorating the various events with its commemorative postage stamp issues. The first U.S. Postage issue to depict a U.S. space vehicle was issued in 1948, the Fort Bliss issue. The first issue to commemorate a space project by name was the ECHO I communications satellite commemorative issue of 1960. Next was the Project Mercury issue of 1962. As U.S. space exploration progressed a variety of other commemorative issues followed, many of which bear accurate depictions of satellites, space capsules, Apollo Lunar Modules, space suits, and other items of interest.
The Washington–Franklin Issues are a series of definitive U.S. Postage stamps depicting George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, issued by the U.S. Post Office between 1908 and 1922. The distinctive feature of this issue is that it employs only two engraved heads set in ovals—Washington and Franklin in full profile—and replicates one or another of these portraits on every stamp denomination in the series. This is a significant departure from previous definitive issues, which had featured pantheons of famous Americans, with each portrait-image confined to a single denomination. At the same time, this break with the recent past represented a return to origins. Washington and Franklin, after all, had appeared on the first two American stamps, issued in 1847, and during the next fifteen years, each of the eight stamp denominations available featured either Washington or Franklin.
The Regular Issues of 1922–1931 were a series of 27 U.S. postage stamps issued for general everyday use by the U.S. Post Office. Unlike the definitives previously in use, which presented only a Washington or Franklin image, each of these definitive stamps depicted a different president or other subject, with Washington and Franklin each confined to a single denomination. The series not only restored the historical tradition of honoring multiple presidents on U.S. Postage but extended it. Offering the customary presidential portraits of the martyred Lincoln and Garfield, the war hero Grant, and the founding fathers Washington and Jefferson, the series also memorialized some of the more recently deceased presidents, beginning with Hayes, McKinley, Cleveland and Roosevelt. Later, the deaths of Harding, Wilson and Taft all prompted additions to the presidential roster of Regular Issue stamps, and Benjamin Harrison's demise (1901) was belatedly deemed recent enough to be acknowledged as well, even though it had already been recognized in the Series of 1902. The Regular Issues also included other notable Americans, such as Martha Washington and Nathan Hale—and, moreover, was the first definitive series since 1869 to offer iconic American pictorial images: these included the Statue of Liberty, the Capitol Building and others. The first time (1869) that images other than portraits of statesmen had been featured on U.S. postage, the general public disapproved, complaining that the scenes were no substitute for images of presidents and Franklin. However, with the release of these 1922 regular issues, the various scenes—which included the Statue of Liberty, the Lincoln Memorial and even an engraving of an American Buffalo—prompted no objections. To be sure, this series presented pictorial images only on the higher-value stamps; the more commonly used denominations, of 12 cents and lower, still offered the traditional portraits.

The U.S. Parcel Post stamps of 1912–13 were the first such stamps issued by the U.S. Post Office Department and consisted of twelve denominations to pay the postage on parcels weighing 16 ounces and more, with each denomination printed in the same color of "carmine-rose". Their border design was similar while each denomination of stamp bore its own distinctive image in the center (vignette). Unlike regular postage items, whose rates were determined by weight in ounces, Parcel Post rates were determined and measured by increments in pounds. The new stamps were soon widely used by industry, farmers and others who lived in rural areas. Partly owing to some confusion involving their usage, their exclusive use as Parcel Post stamps proved short lived, as regular postage stamps were soon allowed to be used to pay parcel postage rates.
LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin was a German passenger-carrying, hydrogen-filled rigid airship which flew from 1928 to 1937. It was designed and built to show that intercontinental airship travel was practicable. Its operational history included several long flights, such as a polar exploration mission, a round-the-world trip, trips to the Middle East and the Americas, and latterly being used as a propaganda vehicle for the ruling Nazi Party. The airship was withdrawn from service following the Hindenburg disaster.
During the years 1936 to 1937 the United States Post Office issued a series of commemorative stamps honoring prominent figures of the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy who served during the earlier chapters of American history. President Theodore Roosevelt had campaigned for these issues while he was president. The issues, however, did not materialize until President Franklin D. Roosevelt, an avid stamp collector himself, and a frequent motivator of stamp issues and designs, had campaigned for their release. Ten stamps in all were issued on different dates during the course of six months, with the denominations of 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 cents for both the army and navy issues.
