Martina Navratilova defeated Evonne Goolagong Cawley in the final, 7–6, 6–4 to win the singles tennis title at the 1978 Virginia Slims Championships. It was her first Tour Finals singles title, and the first of an eventual record eight such titles.

Evonne Fay Goolagong Cawley is an Australian former world No. 1 tennis player. Goolagong was one of the world's leading players in the 1970s and early 1980s.

The tournament was held from March 29 to April 2, 1978, in the Oakland Coliseum Arena. Top-seeded Martina Navratilova won the singles event and the accompanying $50,000 first prize money.
