The 1980 Badminton World Cup was the second edition of an international tournament Badminton World Cup. The event was held in Kyoto, Japan in the month of January. [1] Competitions for mixed doubles were not conducted. [2] Indonesia won men's singles and men's doubles events while Japan won women's doubles and Denmark won women's singles event. [3]

Liem Swie King is an Indonesian former badminton player who excelled from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s. He won the All England in 1978, 1979 and 1981. He was one of the world's leading singles players of his era. A world level player in men's doubles as well as men's singles, he was known for the ferocity of his jumping smash.
Wong Peng Soon, was a Malayan/Singaporean badminton player who reigned as a top player in Malaya from the 1930s to the 1950s when it was a single nation. Noted for his smooth but powerful strokes and graceful footwork, he won the singles title seven times in Singapore and eight times in Malaya during this period, as well as being the top player in the All England, the Danish Open, the Indian Open, and the Philippines Open to name a few. Wong's great rival during his career was his contemporary Ong Poh Lim.

PB Djarum is an Indonesian badminton club in Kudus, Central Java. This club begins from a brak, located at Jl. Bitingan Lama No. 35 – Kudus, was used as a badminton court in 1969 in the afternoons under the Kudus community. PT Djarum's CEO, Budi Hartono, encouraged its use among his employees, who enjoyed playing there. A young athlete, Liem Swie King, played well, leading Budi Hartono to seriously develop the Kudus community's activities into the PB Djarum organization.

Ong Poh Lim was a Malayan/Singaporean badminton player who had won numerous national and international titles from the late 1940s to the early 1960s. Known for his quickness and his aggressive, unorthodox playing style, Ong won many singles and doubles titles, including the Singapore, Malaysia, All-England, French, Danish and Thomas Cup championships in the 1940s and 1950s. He also invented the backhand flick serve known as the “crocodile serve”, a tactic that had been routinely used in the modern game. Ong was a keen rival to badminton legend Wong Peng Soon.

It was held in Istora Senayan indoor stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia from 18 to 22 December with total prize money of US$100,000. The main sponsor of this tournament was Cathay Pacific. Malaysian team won titles in Men's singles and doubles event, while South Korea won Women's doubles and Mixed doubles disciplines. Chinese Tang won the Women's singles title.
