The United States Football League (USFL) was a professional American football league that played for three seasons, 1983 through 1985. The league played a spring/summer schedule in each of its active seasons. The 1986 season was scheduled to be played in the autumn/winter, directly competing against the long-established National Football League (NFL). However, the USFL ceased operations before that season was scheduled to begin.

The Michigan Panthers were a professional American football team based in the Detroit, Michigan area. Thomas Allen Thayer is an American former professional football player who was a guard in the National Football League (NFL) and United States Football League (USFL). He played in the NFL for the Chicago Bears and the Miami Dolphins, and won a Super Bowl as a member of the 1985 Chicago Bears. Prior to his NFL career, Thayer played in the USFL for the Chicago Blitz, Arizona Wranglers and the Arizona Outlaws from 1983 to 1985. He is currently the color commentator on WMVP for Chicago Bears broadcasts.

Anthony “AC” Carter is an American former professional football player who was a wide receiver for 13 years in the United States Football League (USFL) and National Football League (NFL). He made three-consecutive Pro Bowls for the Minnesota Vikings and was honored by Minnesota as one of the 50 Greatest Vikings of all time. Carter played college football for the Michigan Wolverines, finishing his career as a three-time All-American, and a two-time unanimous All-American selection. He is currently third all-time in receiving yards, and second all-time in receiving touchdowns for the University of Michigan.

Gerald J. Feehery is a former American football offensive lineman in the National Football League (NFL). He attended Cardinal O'Hara High School in Springfield, Pennsylvania. At Syracuse University he lettered all four years from 1979 through 1982. He was not drafted in the 1983 NFL draft but was selected by the New Jersey Generals in the 1983 United States Football League Territorial Draft. Feehery would play 47 games over six seasons in the NFL as a center and guard for the Philadelphia Eagles and the Kansas City Chiefs.

In this season it was raised to six schools per team, which was speculated in the media as a way to allow the New Jersey Generals to sign quarterback Doug Flutie.
