Owing to injuries new acquisition (€1.39 million paid to Vicenza) youngster playmaker Roberto Baggio [2] could not play in Serie A being called for the bench for only three times and, during May played only five matches in Coppa Italia. Other new arrivals to the club were: midfielder Nicola Berti, Sergio Battistini, Maurizio Iorio, Aldo Maldera, Onorati, Gelsi and Labardi.
During April Dutch forward Marco van Basten from Ajax signed with the team a three-year-agreement (until 1989), however, the transfer in was not completed due to the arrival of a new chairman Piercesare Baretti who did not give the green light to the contract. [3]
Meanwhile in Coppa Italia the squad reached the Semifinals stage being defeated by future Champion A.S. Roma after two legs. Argentine Defender Daniel Passarella was the season topscorer with 15 goals. [4]

The 2003–04 Serie A was the 102nd season of top-tier Italian football, the 72nd in a round-robin tournament. It contained 18 teams for the 16th and last time from the 1988–89 season. With the bottom three being relegated, the 15th placed side would face the sixth-highest team from Serie B, with the winner playing in the Serie A in the subsequent 2004–05 season.
The 1997–98 Serie A saw Juventus win their 25th national title, with Internazionale placing second; both teams qualified for the 1998–99 UEFA Champions League. Udinese, Roma, Fiorentina, Parma qualified for the 1998–99 UEFA Cup. Lazio qualified for the UEFA Cup Winners Cup courtesy of winning the Coppa Italia. Bologna and Sampdoria qualified for the 1998 UEFA Intertoto Cup. Brescia, Atalanta, Lecce and Napoli were relegated to Serie B.
The 1989–90 Serie A season was another successful year for Napoli, with Diego Maradona being among the leading goalscorers in Serie A, behind Marco van Basten of Milan and Roberto Baggio of Fiorentina. But while Baggio's Fiorentina narrowly avoided relegation, Maradona's Napoli won their second Serie A title in four seasons, while Van Basten helped Milan retain the European Cup as compensation for their failure to win the Serie A title, having finished two points behind Napoli. Demoted to Serie B for 1990–91 were Udinese, Hellas Verona, Cremonese and Ascoli. In Europe, Sampdoria won the Cup Winners Cup and Juventus the UEFA Cup, making this year the most successful in Italian football history.
The 1986–87 Serie A season ended with Napoli doing the "domestic double", winning their first Scudetto and third Coppa Italia, spurred on by their talismanic captain Diego Maradona, who had also just played a key part in World Cup glory for his home country of Argentina.
During the 1997–98 Italian football season, Società Sportiva Lazio competed in the Serie A, Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup.
Associazione Calcio Fiorentina enjoyed its best season in the 1990s on the pitch, but was left wondering what might have been. Leading the domestic Serie A championship a long way into the season, Fiorentina's title charge fell to pieces, as it lost unnecessary points while eventual champions Milan and runners-up Lazio continued winning their matches. In the end, Fiorentina salvaged third place in the league, qualifying for the UEFA Champions League in 1999–2000.
During the 1997-98 season Bologna F.C. competed in Serie A and Coppa Italia.
During the 1997–98 season, the club's eighth in Serie A, Parma Associazione Calcio competed in Serie A, the Coppa Italia, and the UEFA Champions League.
A.C. Fiorentina finished in the midfield of Serie A, beating Roma 1-0 in a playoff match due to a goal by ex-Roma player Roberto Pruzzo. The season also marked the international breakthrough of Roberto Baggio, the striker scoring 15 league goals, also setting up several of Stefano Borgonovo's 14.
A.C. Milan won their second consecutive European Cup, thanks to a final victory over Benfica. The Dutch trio of Marco van Basten, Ruud Gullit and Frank Rijkaard was now a firmly established unit, but their efforts were not quite enough to defeat Napoli in the title chase.
Juventus finished in 4th place in the league this season, but won the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup.
During the 1997-98 season Vicenza competed in Serie A, Coppa Italia and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
The 2014–15 Coppa Italia, also known as TIM Cup for sponsorship reasons, was the 68th edition of the national cup in Italian football. Napoli were the defending champions, having won the previous year's final, but were eliminated in the semi-finals by Lazio. Juventus emerged victorious with a 2–1 win in extra time, achieving a record tenth title.
During the 1996–97 season Bologna Football Club 1909 competed in Serie A and Coppa Italia.
