On 22 January 1988, a sequence of destructive earthquakes measuring 6.2, 6.3, and 6.6 struck southwest of Tennant Creek, Australia which was felt as far north as Darwin and in other regions of the country. The largest event of the sequence was the largest earthquake ever recorded in mainland Australia since records began in 1800. [6] An intensity of IX (Violent) was observed. Despite the large magnitude of the earthquakes and a close proximity to a town, in a country where earthquakes of this size are not common, damages were limited. Thousands of aftershocks were reported and felt across Northern Territory. [6]

Tectonic setting

The continent of Australia borders some very seismically active regions, as such as the boundary between the Pacific and the Australian Plate where both plates collide, which runs from the island of New Guinea all the way to New Zealand. On the south and west sides of it are moderately active mid-ocean ridges which run through the Indian Ocean. However, the continent does not border these and is intraplate therefore occurrences of large earthquakes are rather rare. Despite the low seismicity, most large earthquakes which occur within Australia are scientifically significant. A few earthquakes of magnitude 5 occur yearly in average, and smaller, local earthquakes can occur daily and be detected by seismograms. [7]

These big earthquakes near Tennant Creek occurred in the Proterozoic North Australian Craton, approximately 1500 km further south than the nearest plate boundary, therefore these events are referred to as intraplate earthquakes. The area where the quakes struck had no history of any earthquake before 1986 compared to the other seismic zones that have had bigger quakes which were seismically active beforehand. [8]

The Tennant Creek fault zone which includes the Kunayungku and Lake Surprise faults which were ruptured, is located on the border between a Palaeozoic basin and an early Proterozoic Tennant Creek inlier which is surrounded by younger rocks. Both of these areas are a part of the North Australian Craton, which has formed a single stationary block of crust for 1,700 million years. The inlier is a basement of another bigger feature and consists of a group made up of sedimentary and metasedimentary rocks which is the Warramunga group which is intruded by older granite. Cambrian sedimentary platform sequences of the Palaeozoic Wiso Basin overlaps the Tennant Creek inlier on the western side near the fault scarps located in the region forming an extensive transition zone. [8]

The focal depths of the Tennant Creek sequence ranged from 3.5 to 6.5 km, which is deeper than the thickness of the Cambrian platform near the epicenter. This proves that rather than the basin sedimentary, the Proterozoic basement controlled the nucleation of rupture. [8]

Earthquakes

The sequence created two scarps on the faults; the Lake Surprise scarp on the southern side in a boomerang shape looked from bird's eye and the Kunayungku scarp on the northern side which is shorter than Lake Surprise. On the west-northwest trending scarps, the Lake Surprise scarp was lifted as much as 2 meters compared to the northern one and a trench across the southern LS (Lake Surprise) scarp revealed a thrust plane that was dipping 20 to 30 degrees. No scarp was found when the pipelines that got damage were being surveyed. Other articles describe the aftershock zones as dipping towards the southwest at 40 to 50 degrees from the west-northwest trending ruptures. The east-northeast trending Western LS scarp did display a left lateral strike-slip motion but dip-slip was the dominant characteristic. The slip on the Western LS fault from observations in the area was thought to be facing northward, opposite to that observed on the scarps trending west-northwest. It is interpreted that the preliminary epicenters of the aftershocks are displaying a northwest dip for the Western LS fault which concludes that it is a thrust fault which also proves, along with focal mechanisms inferred from waveform data, that the focal mechanism of the 3 main shocks are thrust, oblique thrust and thrust in order. [9] [8]

Aftershocks

In the following year after the sequence, more than 15,000 aftershocks were recorded by the nearby Warramunga seismic array, with some aftershocks exceeding the magnitude 5 mark. The aftershocks include a 5.8 which occurred 8 hours after the biggest and last mainshock, a 5.5 occurring a week after and a 5.2 occurring later in the year at September 30. [5]

Impacts

As a result of the events, lengthy surface ruptures measuring up to 32 km were observed along the faults. [3]

Pipelines were heavily damaged as a result of the surface ruptures. Tennant Creek's hospital was seriously damaged. A few other homes were lightly damaged. [1] No injuries or deaths were reported and US$1 million of damage was caused. [3]

The San Jacinto Fault Zone (SJFZ) is a major strike-slip fault zone that runs through San Bernardino, Riverside, San Diego, and Imperial Counties in Southern California. The SJFZ is a component of the larger San Andreas transform system and is considered to be the most seismically active fault zone in the area. Together they relieve the majority of the stress between the Pacific and North American tectonic plates.

The 1986 Chalfant Valley earthquake struck southern Mono County near Bishop and Chalfant, California at 07:42:28 Pacific Daylight Time on July 21. With a moment magnitude of 6.2 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong), the shock injured two people and caused property damage estimated at $2.7 million in the affected areas. There was a significant foreshock and aftershock sequence that included a few moderate events, and was the last in a series of three earthquakes that affected southern California and the northern Owens Valley in July 1986.

The 1872 North Cascades earthquake occurred at 9:40 p.m. local time on December 14 in central Washington Territory. A maximum Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe) was assessed for several locations, though less intense shaking was observed at many other locations in Washington, Oregon, and British Columbia. Some of these intermediate outlying areas reported V (Moderate) to VII shaking, but intensities as high as IV (Light) were reported as far distant as Idaho and Montana. Due to the remote location of the mainshock and a series of strong aftershocks, damage to structures was limited to a few cabins close to the areas of the highest intensity.

The 1986 North Palm Springs earthquake occurred on July 8 at 02:20:44 local time with a moment magnitude of 6.0 and a maximum Mercalli Intensity of VII. The shock occurred in a complex setting along the San Andreas Fault Zone where it bisects San Gorgonio Mountain and San Jacinto Peak at the San Gorgonio Pass and was the first in a series of three earthquakes that affected southern California and the northern Owens Valley in July 1986. Numerous strong motion instruments recorded the event, one of which showed relatively high accelerations. Between 29 and 40 people were injured, and financial losses were estimated to be in the range of $4.5–6 million.

The 1999 Aïn Témouchent earthquake occurred on December 22 at 18:36:56 local time in northern Algeria. The dip-slip event had a moment magnitude of 5.6 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VII. At least 22 were killed, 175 were injured, and 15,000–25,000 were made homeless. The Belgian Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters' EM-DAT database and the USGS' National Geophysical Data Center both list financial losses of $60.93 million.

Meers Fault is a fault in Oklahoma that extends from Kiowa County to Comanche County. It is marked by a 22–26 kilometers (14–16 mi) long conspicuous fault scarp but the fault extends beyond the ends of this scarp. The Meers fault is part of a group of faults that lie between the Anadarko Basin and the Wichita Mountains.

The 1987 Superstition Hills and Elmore Ranch earthquakes were a pair of earthquakes measuring Mw  6.0 and 6.5 that rattled the Imperial Valley of California. The earthquakes caused damage in Southern California and Mexico, but was limited due to their location in a sparsely populated area. It was felt as far as Las Vegas and Phoenix. More than 90 were injured, and two people were killed in Mexico.

The 1968 Borrego Mountain earthquake occurred on April 8, at 18:28 PST in the geologically active Salton Trough of Southern California. The Salton Trough represents a pull-apart basin formed by movements along major faults. This region is dominated by major strike-slip faults one of them being the San Jacinto Fault which produced the 1968 earthquake. The mainshock's epicenter was near the unincorporated community of Ocotillo Wells in San Diego County. The moment magnitude (Mw ) 6.6 strike-slip earthquake struck with a focal depth of 11.1 km (6.9 mi). The zone of surface rupture was assigned a maximum Modified Mercalli intensity (MMI) of VII.

The 1906 Manasi earthquake (玛纳斯地震), also known as the Manas earthquake occurred in the morning of December 23, 1906, at 02:21 UTC+8:00 local time or December 22, 18:21 UTC. It measured 8.0–8.3 on the moment magnitude scale and 8.3 on the surface-wave magnitude scale. The epicenter of this earthquake is located in Manas County, Xinjiang, China. An estimated 280–300 people died and another 1,000 more were injured by the earthquake.

The 1986 Kalamata earthquake struck the southern Peloponnese Region of Greece on September 13 at 20:24 local time. The 12.5 km (7.8 mi) deep moment magnitude (Mw ) 5.9 earthquake had an epicenter near the coastal city of Kalamata and was assigned X (Extreme) on the Mercalli intensity scale. The earthquake was the result of normal faulting along a northwest-dipping fault and produced surface ruptures. Extensive damage was reported in Kalamata and Elaiochori. At least 20 people died and 330 were injured. Survivors sought refuge at campsites and reconstruction work lasted five years.

The 1995 Menglian earthquake or 1995 Myanmar–China earthquake occurred on 12 July at 05:46:43 local time in the Myanmar–China border region. The earthquake had an epicenter on the Myanmar side of the border, located in the mountainous region of Shan State. It registered 7.3 on the Chinese surface wave magnitude scale (Ms ) and 6.8 on the moment magnitude scale (Mw ). With a maximum Mercalli intensity assigned at VIII, it killed 11 people and left another 136 injured. Over 100,000 homes in both countries were destroyed and 42,000 seriously damaged. Some damage to structures were also reported in Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai, Thailand. The low death toll from this earthquake was attributed to an early warning issued prior to it happening. Precursor events including foreshocks and some seismic anomalies led to an evacuation of the area before the mainshock struck. It is thought to be one of the few successfully predicted earthquakes in history.

The 2021 Loyalty Islands earthquake was a 7.7 magnitude earthquake that struck offshore between Vanuatu and New Caledonia on February 11, 2021 at 00:19 local time. It is the 4th largest earthquake of 2021.

An earthquake struck approximately 53 kilometres SSE of the town of Mansfield, in the Victorian Alps of Australia on 22 September 2021, at 09:15 local time. The earthquake measured 5.9 on the moment magnitude scale. The earthquake caused minor structural damage in parts of Melbourne and left one person injured. The earthquake was also felt in New South Wales, Australian Capital Territory, South Australia and Tasmania. The earthquake was substantially stronger than the 1989 Newcastle earthquake that measured 5.6 and killed 13 people.

The 1885 Kashmir earthquake, also known as the Baramulla earthquake occurred on 30 May in Srinagar. It had an estimated moment magnitude of Mw  6.3–6.8 and maximum Medvedev–Sponheuer–Karnik scale intensity of VIII (Damaging). At least 3,081 people died and severe damage resulted.

The 1969 Alaşehir earthquake occurred on March 28 at 03:48 local time near the city of Alaşehir in Turkey's Manisa Province. The Mw  6.8 earthquake struck at 10 km (6.2 mi) depth. It had a MSK 64 intensity of VIII (Destructive). At least 53 people were killed in the earthquake.

The 1979 Saint Elias earthquake occurred near noon local time on 28 February. It measured Mw 7.4–7.6. Though the maximum recorded Modified Mercalli intensity was VII, damage was minimal and there were no casualties due to the remoteness of the faulting. The epicenter lies near the Alaskan border between the United States and Canada.

The 1912 Acambay earthquake struck the State of Mexico on 19 November at 07:55 local time. It had a moment magnitude of 6.7–6.9 Mw  and an epicenter near the town of Acambay, 80 km (50 mi) northwest of Mexico City. Up to 161 people died and there was severe destruction. It is regarded as one of the most important earthquakes in Mexico's seismological history, having been widely studied.

The 1947 Dustabad earthquake, also known as the Charmeh earthquake, occurred in South Khorasan Province of northeastern Iran on 23 September. The mainshock had a magnitude of Mw 6.9 and maximum Modified Mercalli intensity of VIII (Severe). It was accompanied by a Mw  6.1 aftershock on 26 September. These earthquakes killed an estimated 500 people.
