The 1990–91 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers men's basketball team represented Coastal Carolina University during the 1990–91 college basketball season. This was head coach Russ Bergman's third season at Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers competed in the Big South Conference and played their home games at Kimbel Arena. They finished the season 248, 131 in Big South play to capture the regular season championship. The Chanticleers won the 1991 Big South Conference men's basketball tournament to advance to face Jackson State in a play-in game for the right to advance to the NCAA tournament. Coastal Carolina defeated Jackson state to earn an automatic bid to the 1991 NCAA tournament as No. 15 seed in the Southeast Region, marking the school's first ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. They lost in the first round to Indiana. [1]

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers are the athletic teams that represent Coastal Carolina University. They participate in Division I of the NCAA as a member of the Sun Belt Conference (SBC) in most sports, having joined that conference as a full but non-football member on July 1, 2016. At that time, the football team began a transition from the second-level Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to the top-level Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS). The team played the 2016 season as an FCS independent, joined SBC football for the 2017 season, and became full FBS members for 2018 and beyond. A Chanticleer is a proud and fierce rooster. Before joining the SBC, the Chanticleers had been members of the Big South Conference since that league's formation in 1983. Coastal fields varsity teams in 19 sports, 8 for men and 11 for women. The university regularly competed for the Sasser Cup, the Big South's trophy for the university with the best sports program among the member institutions, winning the trophy nine times, tied with rival Liberty University.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Coastal Carolina Chanticleers baseball</span> Baseball team of Coastal Carolina University

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers baseball program has been the university's most consistent program in terms of success. Head Coach Gary Gilmore has led the Chanticleers to 16 NCAA Regional appearances and three Super Regional appearances since being hired in 1996. The program has received #1 regional seeds on five occasions and won 50+ games in 2005, 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2016. In addition, the Chanticleers hosted NCAA Regionals in 2007, 2008, 2010, and 2018. The program hosted a Super Regional in 2010 and won the 2016 College World Series.

Tony Dunkin is an American former college basketball standout for Coastal Carolina University. He is best known for being the only NCAA Division I men's basketball player to be honored as his conference player of the year all four times. In 2003–04 he was part of the inaugural 11-person class inducted into the Big South Conference Hall of Fame.

The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers men's soccer team represents Coastal Carolina University in all NCAA Division I men's college soccer competitions. The team competes in the Sun Belt Conference, following previous tenures in Conference USA and Big South Conference, both of which had been prior conference homes for that ream. During their Big South tenure, the Chanticleers were one of that league's more successful teams, both within the conference and in the NCAA Tournament. Gary R. Gilmore is an American college baseball coach who is currently the head coach of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. He has held the position since the start of the 1996 season. Coastal Carolina has qualified for 17 NCAA tournaments, most recently in 2022. In 2016, the team made its first appearance in the College World Series and won the 2016 NCAA National Championship. He was elected to the ABCA Hall of Fame in 2022.

The 1991 Big South Conference men's basketball tournament took place February 28 – March 2, 1991, at the Civic Center of Anderson in Anderson, South Carolina. For the second time in their school history, Coastal Carolina won the tournament, led by head coach Russ Bergman. The Chanticleers advanced to face Jackson State in a play-in game for the right to advance to the 1991 NCAA tournament. Coastal Carolina defeated Jackson State, 78-59, to secure the Big South Conference's first ever bid to the NCAA tournament, and their first tournament bid in school history.

With the creation of divisions to cut down on travel due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they played in the East Division. they finished the season 18–8, 9–5 in Sun Belt play to finish in second place in the East Division. They defeated Troy in the quarterfinals of the Sun Belt tournament before losing to Appalachian State in the semifinals. They received a bid to the College Basketball Invitational where they defeated Bryant and Stetson to advance to the CBI championship game. There they lost to Pepperdine.

They finished the season 22–10, 12–4 in Big South play to finish in second place. The Chanticleers won the 1993 Big South Conference men's basketball tournament to advance to the 1993 NCAA tournament. Playing as the No. 16 seed in the West Region, the team was beaten in the opening round by No. 1 seed and eventual National runner-up Michigan and the famed Fab Five.
