The 1996 Asian Wrestling Championships were held in Xiaoshan, China. The event took place from April 4 to April 10, 1996. It acted as the Asian qualifying tournament for the 1996 Summer Olympics wrestling tournament.
The first women's tournament was an open competition, an American wrestler Tricia Saunders was the only non-Asian wrestler in competition and won the gold.

The Torneo Gran Alternativa is an annual lucha libre tournament held by the Mexican professional wrestling promotion Consejo Mundial de Lucha Libre (CMLL). The tournament was not held in 1997, 2000, or 2002, but was held twice in 1996 and 1998. The most recent Torneo Gran Alternativa tournament was held in December 2021. The tournament has always been held in Arena Mexico in Mexico City, Mexico, the main arena of CMLL.

Bakhtiyar Bagasharovich Baiseitov is a Kazakh former amateur Greco-Roman wrestler, who competed in the men's middleweight category. Baiseitov wrestled for the Kazakh squad in two editions of the Summer Olympics, finishing eleventh in Atlanta and tenth in Sydney, respectively. Outside the Games, Baiseitov produced a career tally of six medals in a major international competition, including his middleweight titles that he received each at the World Championships and at the Asian Games in 1998. Baiseitov trained throughout his wrestling career for Professional Sport Club Daulet in Almaty under his personal coach and 1988 silver medalist Daulet Turlykhanov of the former Soviet Union.
Takamitsu Katayama is a Japanese former amateur Greco-Roman wrestler, who competed in the men's middleweight category. Katayama wrestled for the Japanese squad in two editions of the Summer Olympics, finishing eighth in Atlanta and seventeenth in Sydney, respectively. Outside the Games, Katayama produced a career tally of seven medals in a major international competition, two of which were awarded at the Asian Games. Katayama was also a member of the national wrestling squad under coach and three-time Olympian Yasutoshi Moriyama, while training full time at the Sports Club of Self-Defense Forces in Saitama Prefecture.

Zhamila Bakbergenova is a Kazakhstani freestyle wrestler. She is a three-time medalist in the women's 72 kg event at the World Wrestling Championships. She is a five-time medalist, including three gold medals, at the Asian Wrestling Championships. She is also a two-time medalist at the Islamic Solidarity Games.
Nabira Esenbaeva is an Uzbekistani freestyle wrestler. She won the silver medal in the women's 59 kg event at the 2018 Asian Wrestling Championships held in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. In 2019, she won one of the bronze medals in the women's 62 kg event at the Asian Wrestling Championships held in Xi'an, China.
Uzur Dzhuzupbekov is a Kyrgyzstani Greco-Roman wrestler. He won the gold medal in the men's 97 kg event at the 2019 Asian Wrestling Championships held in Xi'an, China. He is also a bronze medalist at the Asian Games and a two-time silver medalist at the Islamic Solidarity Games. He represented Kyrgyzstan at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
Dauletbike Yakhshimuratova is an Uzbekistani freestyle wrestler. She won one of the bronze medals in the women's 48 kg event at the 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.
Marina Sedneva is a Kazakhstani freestyle wrestler. She won one of the bronze medals in the 55 kg event at the 2019 Asian Wrestling Championships held in Xi'an, China. She also won one of the bronze medals in her event at the 2023 Asian Wrestling Championships held in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The 2021 Asian Wrestling Championships took place from 13 April to 18 April in Almaty, Kazakhstan. It was held at the same venue as the 2021 Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualification Tournament. This event was the 34th edition of the Asian Wrestling Championships.
