Rafael Nadal defeated Mariano Puerta in the final, 6–7(6–8), 6–3, 6–1, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2005 French Open. It was his first major title. He went on to win a record 14 French Open titles, and 22 major men's singles titles overall. Nadal won the French Open on his tournament debut, the first man to do so since Mats Wilander in 1982, and was the youngest champion since Michael Chang in 1989, at 19 years and two days old when he won the title.
Gastón Gaudio defeated Guillermo Coria in the final, 0–6, 3–6, 6–4, 6–1, 8–6 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2004 French Open. It was his first and only major title, and Gaudio became the first Argentine to win a major since Guillermo Vilas at the 1979 Australian Open. Gaudio came back from two sets down, saved two championship points, and twice broke Coria's serve when the latter was serving for the championship.
Defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the final, 1–6, 6–1, 6–4, 7–6(7–4) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2006 French Open. It was his second French Open title and second major title overall. It was the first of three consecutive years Nadal and Federer would contest the French Open final. This marked Federer's first defeat in a major final; he was attempting to complete the career Grand Slam and to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four major titles at once, having won the preceding Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open titles. The latter feat would ultimately be achieved a decade later by Novak Djokovic, at the same tournament, who here reached the quarterfinals at a major for the first time.
José Acasuso was the defending champion, but chose not to participate this year.
Two-time defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Fernando González in the final, 6–2, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2007 Italian Open.
Spain's Rafael Nadal defeated Chile's Fernando González in the final, 6–3, 7–6(7–2), 6–3 to win the gold medal in men's singles at the 2008 Summer Olympics. The win gave him the third of five components of the career Golden Slam, having already won the French Open and Wimbledon. He would go on to win the Australian Open and the US Open to become the second man to complete the career Golden Slam in singles. Following the event, Nadal became the world No. 1 for the first time, ending Roger Federer's record streak of 237 consecutive weeks with the top ranking. González became the first man to win a medal in men's singles across consecutive Olympiads since Charles Winslow in 1920. In the bronze medal match, Serbia's Novak Djokovic defeated the United States' James Blake, 6–3, 7–6(7–4). It was Serbia's first Olympic tennis medal.
Nicolás Massú was the defending champion but lost in the first round to Agustín Calleri.
Gastón Gaudio was the defending champion, but lost in the second round this year.
Four-time defending champion Rafael Nadal successfully defended his title, defeating David Ferrer in a rematch of the previous year's final, 6–2, 7–5, to win the singles title at the 2009 Barcelona Open. It was his record-extending fifth title at the Barcelona Open.
Nicolás Almagro was the defending champion; however, he lost 1–6, 7–5, 2–6 to Juan Carlos Ferrero in the quarterfinals.
