The 1998 Big East Conference Baseball Tournament was held at Senator Thomas J. Dodd Memorial Stadium in Norwich, CT. This was the fourteenth annual Big East Conference Baseball Tournament. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights won their first tournament championship and claimed the Big East Conference's automatic bid to the 1998 NCAA Division I Baseball Tournament. Rutgers joined the Big East prior to the 1996 season. [3]
The Big East baseball tournament was a 6 team double elimination tournament in 1998. The top six regular season finishers were seeded one through six based on conference winning percentage only. The division used the previous two seasons were discontinued, with all 11 teams competing in a single division. [3]

The Big East Conference was a collegiate athletics conference that consisted of as many as 16 universities in the eastern half of the United States from 1979 to 2013. The conference's members participated in 24 NCAA sports. The conference had a history of success at the national level in basketball throughout its history, while its shorter football program, created by inviting one college and four other "associate members" into the conference, resulted in two national championships.
The Big Ten Conference is the oldest Division I collegiate athletic conference in the United States. Founded as the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives in 1896, it predates the founding of its regulating organization, the NCAA. It is based in Rosemont, Illinois. The Rutgers Scarlet Knights are the athletic teams that represent Rutgers University's New Brunswick campus. In sports, Rutgers is famously known for being the "Birthplace of College Football", hosting the first ever intercollegiate football game on November 6, 1869, in which Rutgers defeated a team from the College of New Jersey with a score of 6 runs to 4.

West Virginia joined the Big 12 Conference after the 2012 season.

Charlie Hickey is an American college baseball coach. He has been the head coach of Central Connecticut since the 2000 season, leading the Blue Devils to six NCAA Tournaments. Previously, he was the head coach at Providence for three seasons (1997–1999). Providence announced it was cutting the program prior to the 1999 season, but the team won that year's Big East title and advanced to an NCAA Regional final.
