Fourth-seeded Arantxa Sánchez Vicario won the title, defeating Monica Seles in the final 7–6(7–5), 0–6, 6–2, to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1998 French Open. This marked the last time Sánchez Vicario defeated Seles at any tournament. It was also the last major final in which either Sánchez Vicario or Seles played.
Jana Novotná defeated Nathalie Tauziat in the final, 6–4, 7–6(7–2) to win the ladies' singles tennis title at the 1998 Wimbledon Championships. This was Novotná's only win in a Wimbledon final on her third attempt. This would be the last time a Czech player would win Wimbledon until Petra Kvitová won in 2011.
