Gustavo Kuerten defeated Sergi Bruguera in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1997 French Open. It was his first major singles title. He became the first unseeded player since Mats Wilander in 1982 and the second-lowest ranked player ever to win a major, and the first Brazilian to win a men's singles major. Following the win, Kuerten improved in the rankings from world No. 66 to No. 15.
Jim Courier defeated Andre Agassi in the final, 3–6, 6–4, 2–6, 6–1, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1991 French Open. It was his first major singles title.
Michael Chang defeated Stefan Edberg in the final, 6–1, 3–6, 4–6, 6–4, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1989 French Open. It was his first major title. Chang remains the youngest-ever men's singles major champion, winning the final at the age of 17 years, 3 months and 20 days, and the first player of Asian descent to win a major. En route to the title, he defeated the world No. 1 and three-time champion Ivan Lendl, which is remembered as one of the most significant matches in French Open history.
Arantxa Sánchez Vicario defeated Mary Pierce in the final, 6–4, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1994 French Open. It was her second French Open title and second major singles title overall. Pierce reached the final with the loss of only 10 games.
