The 1999 TIG Classic singles was the singles event of the twentieth edition of the second tournament in the US Open Series.
Lindsay Davenport was the defending champion, but she was defeated in the semifinals by Venus Williams. Martina Hingis then defeated Williams in the final to claim her second San Diego title.
This tournament is notable for featuring the last match of 22 time grand slam champion Steffi Graf. Graf withdrew from her opening match against Amy Frazier early in the third set. She was struggling with her hamstring and thigh. After years of battling with injury woes, she officially retired from professional tennis soon after.

Two-time defending champion Martina Hingis defeated Amélie Mauresmo in the final, 6–2, 6–3 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1999 Australian Open. With the win, she joined Margaret Court, Evonne Goolagong, Steffi Graf, and Monica Seles as the only women to win three consecutive Australian Open titles. Hingis also became the only woman to win three consecutive Australian Open titles in singles and doubles simultaneously.
Venus Williams defeated Lindsay Davenport in the final, 6–4, 7–5 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2000 US Open. It was her second major singles title, and she became the second woman to win Wimbledon, the Olympics, and the US Open in the same season.
Steffi Graf defeated Martina Hingis in the final, 4–6, 7–5, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1999 French Open. It was her Open Era record-extending 22nd and final major singles title, and she equaled Chris Evert's record of nine French Open final appearances. Graf also became the first player in the Open Era to defeat the top-three ranked players at the same major; defeating world No. 2 Lindsay Davenport in the quarterfinals, No. 3 Seles in the semifinals and No. 1 Hingis in the final. Hingis was attempting to complete the career Grand Slam in singles.
Iva Majoli defeated Martina Hingis in the final, 6–4, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 1997 French Open. Majoli became the first Croat to win a major title. This was the only major match Hingis lost in the 1997 season, preventing her from achieving the Grand Slam. Hingis was on a 35-match winning streak, dating to the start of the season in Sydney.
