The 2002 National Games, also known as the 32nd National Games of India and informally as Andhra Pradesh 2002 was the 32nd edition of the National Games of India, [1] held from 13 December 2002 to 22 December 2002 in Hyderabad, Secunderabad and Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.

President, Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam inaugurated the 32nd National Games at the Gachibowli Stadium. [2] The mascot was Veera, Ongole bull. [3] [4] The opening and closing ceremonies featuring laser shows, fireworks and entertainment from movie stars like Amitabh Bachchan and Aishwarya Rai. [5] [6]

5,887 athletes in 31 disciplines- including roller-skating, introduced at Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N. Chandrababu Naidu's behest- took part in the Games distributed between Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam. [7] [8]

Andhra Pradesh state government spent ₹184 crore (US$23 million), including a loan of ₹150 crore (US$19 million) from Housing and Urban Development Corporation (HUDCO) for the creation of massive infrastructure, import of state-of-the-art sporting equipment and upgrading of existing facilities. The matches of hockey were played at astro turf at the Police Hockey Stadium, Begumpet. Andhra Pradesh government's emphasis on sports in 2002 saw the emergence of outstanding sportspersons like Pullela Gopichand, Saina Nehwal and Sania Mirza. [9] [10] [11]

Closing ceremony

Capacity crowd witnessed the closing ceremony. [12] Prime Minister of India Atal Bihari Vajpayee was present at the ceremony. [13] Indian Olympic Association president Suresh Kalmadi declared the Games closed in the presence of Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

Gangavaram Port is a port located in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. Inaugurated in July 2009, it has a depth of 21m. It is managed by Gangavaram Port Ltd., a special-purpose company floated by Mr. DVS Raju, who serves as its chairman and managing director. Ongole cattle as called as Ongolu Gitta are an indigenous cattle breed that originates from Prakasam District in the state of Andhra Pradesh in India. The breed derives its name from the place the breed originates from, Ongole. The Ongole breed of cattle, Bos indicus, is in great demand as it is said to possess resistance to both foot and mouth disease and mad cow disease. These cattle are commonly used in bull fights in Mexico and some parts of East Africa due to their strength and aggressiveness. They also participate in traditional bull fights in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu. Cattle breeders use the fighting ability of the bulls to choose the right stock for breeding in terms of purity and strength. The mascot of the 2002 National Games of India was Veera, an Ongole Bull.

The 1999 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election was conducted in 3 phases simultaneously with the 1999 Indian general election for the 11th Andhra Pradesh Assembly. The election was held on 4 September 1999, 11 September 1999 and 17 September 1999 for 91, 105 and 98 constitutencies respectively. The election concluded with the Telugu Desam Party sweeping the polls with 180 seats and forming the government once again.

The Second N. Chandrababu Naidu ministry or the Nineteenth ministry of United Andhra Pradesh of the state of United Andhra Pradesh was formed on 11 October 1999 headed by N. Chandrababu Naidu as the Chief Minister following the 1999 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly election. The cabinet was sworn in a simple ceremony held at Raj Bhavan, Hyderabad. Initially the chief minister and eight other ministers of his council of ministers were administered the oath of office and secrecy by the then Governor C. Rangarajan. The cabinet was later expanded and reshuffled for four times citing several reasons on different occasions during the five year tenure to end on 14 May 2004.

Sidda Raghava Rao is an Indian politician who is an ex-Minister for Environment, Forests, Science and Technology in the Andhra Pradesh cabinet. He earlier worked as a Minister for Transport, Roads & Buildings. Born in Chimakurthy of Prakasam district to Sidda Venkata Subbamma and Sidda Venkateswarlu, Raghava Rao grew up in a large family of eight brothers. He completed his schooling at Chimakurthy and went to Bapatla to pursue intermediate. He later graduated in Commerce from Andhra University in 1977. Raghava Rao joined the YSR Congress Party in June, 2020 after losing the 2019 Lok Sabha Elections from Ongole on a TDP ticket.

Millennium IT Towers is an information technology (IT) park situated in the city of Visakhapatnam, India. It was set up for the growth of information technology and as an initiative in making Visakhapatnam city as a Financial-tech (Fintech) Capital in the state of Andhra Pradesh by the APIIC and Government of Andhra Pradesh.
