The 2008 WNBA season was the 12th season for the New York Liberty. The first ever outdoor professional basketball game was held at Arthur Ashe Stadium between the New York Liberty and the Indiana Fever. [1] Over 19,000 fans attended the game.

The New York Liberty are an American professional basketball team based in the New York City borough of Brooklyn. The Liberty compete in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) as a member of the Eastern Conference. The team was founded in 1997 and is one of the eight original franchises of the league. The team is owned by Joe Tsai and Clara Wu Tsai, the majority owners of the NBA's Brooklyn Nets. The team's home games are played at Barclays Center.
The Indiana Fever are an American professional basketball team based in Indianapolis. The Fever compete in the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA) a member of the Eastern Conference. The team was founded for the 2000 WNBA season. The team is owned by Herb Simon, the founder of Simon Property Group, who also owns the Fever's NBA counterpart, the Indiana Pacers.

The season marked the third consecutive season that the Fever earned a playoff berth. They eliminated the Connecticut Sun, 2–1, in the First Round of the playoffs but then in turn were eliminated in the Eastern Conference Finals, 2–1, by the Detroit Shock.
The Liberty Outdoor Classic was the first regular-season professional basketball game played outdoors. It was played between the Indiana Fever and New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association on July 19, 2008, as part of the 2008 Women's National Basketball Association regular-season schedule and the New York Liberty's home schedule. The game was held at Arthur Ashe Stadium, part of the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center located within Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Flushing, New York, and was the first non-tennis sporting event held in that venue. A portion of the proceeds from the game went to support the Breast Cancer Research Foundation
The 2009 WNBA Season was the 13th season of the Women's National Basketball Association. It is the first WNBA season without a Houston franchise, the Comets having folded in December 2008. The season ended with the Phoenix Mercury winning their second championship in three years.

Emily Ann Engstler is an American professional basketball player for the Washington Mystics of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), currently playing for Hapoel Lev Jerusalem of the Israeli Female Basketball Premier League. She formerly played for the Indiana Fever and the Minnesota Lynx. She played college basketball for Syracuse during her first three years at the college level, then for Louisville, earning first-team All-ACC honors in her only season with the team. Engstler graduated from St. Francis Preparatory School in Queens, New York, where she was rated a five-star recruit by ESPN and named a McDonald's All-American.
Betnijah Laney-Hamilton is an American professional basketball player for the New York Liberty of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA). She played college basketball for Rutgers University.
