The 2012 season was Bohemians's 92nd season in the League of Ireland. Having finished 5th in the league the previous year the club played in the 2012 League of Ireland Premier Division under manager Aaron Callaghan. During the season they also competed in the 2012 FAI Cup, the 2012 League of Ireland Cup, the Setanta Cup, the Leinster Senior Cup and the UEFA Europa League.

In the 2005 season, Shelbourne finished 3rd in the League of Ireland Premier Division.
During 2010, Bohemians competed in the League of Ireland Premier Division, the FAI Cup, the League of Ireland Cup, the Setanta Cup, the Leinster Senior Cup and the UEFA Champions League. Bohemians had won their 11th league title and their 3rd League Cup in the previous season. This was the club's 120th year in existence.
In the 2001–02 season, Shelbourne were crowned eircom League Premier Division champions.

This edition features clubs exclusively from the League of Ireland Premier Division and the First Division, whereas usually non-league teams are involved. The number of teams has been reduced due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. The restrictions also mean that crowds are restricted or prohibited from attending. The competition began on 10 August 2020 with the first of four rounds and will conclude on 29 November 2020 with the final at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, a nominally neutral venue, which has hosted the final since 2010.
