The 2012 Budapest Grand Prix was a tennis tournament played on outdoor clay courts. It was the 18th edition of the Budapest Grand Prix, an International-level tournament on the 2012 WTA Tour. It took place at the Romai Tennis Academy in Budapest, Hungary, from April 30 through May 5, 2012.
Tennis is a racket sport that can be played individually against a single opponent (singles) or between two teams of two players each (doubles). Each player uses a tennis racket that is strung with cord to strike a hollow rubber ball covered with felt over or around a net and into the opponent's court. The object of the game is to maneuver the ball in such a way that the opponent is not able to play a valid return. The player who is unable to return the ball will not gain a point, while the opposite player will.
The International Tournaments is a category for professional tennis tournaments of the Women's Tennis Association from the 2009 WTA Tour onwards, which replaced the previous Tier III and Tier IV categories. The winner of a WTA International adds 280 points to her WTA ranking.
The 2012 WTA Tour is the elite professional tennis circuit organized by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) for the 2012 tennis season. The 2012 WTA Tour calendar comprises the Grand Slam tournaments, the WTA Premier tournaments, the WTA International tournaments, the Fed Cup, the year-end championships, and the tennis event at the Summer Olympic Games.
