Sabine Katharina Lisicki is a German professional tennis player.

Both the men's and the women's events took place at the NSW Tennis Centre in Sydney, Australia, from 8 to 15 January 2012. Due to rain, the men's singles and doubles finals had to be rescheduled from the evening of 14 January to the morning of 15 January, the day before the Australian Open was due to begin. Jarkko Nieminen and Victoria Azarenka won the singles titles.

The clay courts used for the tournament were dyed blue to provide better contrast with the ball, which garnered controversy amongst players who found the dyeing made the surface too slippery and difficult to maneuver, putting defensive players at a disadvantage. Ion Țiriac, the former Romanian ATP player and billionaire businessman who owns the tournament, instituted the use of the color.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Šafářová defeated Chan Yung-jan and Zheng Jie in the final, 6–4, 7–6(7–5), to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2015 Australian Open. Mattek-Sands and Šafářová were playing for the first time as a team in a tournament and each won their first Grand Slam women's doubles title. The victory made them the first new pairing to win the women's doubles tournament at the Australian Open since 2005, as well as the first to win a Grand Slam women's doubles title since the 2007 US Open. After defeating five seeded pairings en route to the win, they became the first unseeded women's doubles duo to clinch the title at the Australian Open since 2012.

Martina Hingis and Sabine Lisicki were the defending champions, but Lisicki chose not to participate this year. Hingis played alongside Sania Mirza and successfully defended the title, defeating Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina in the final, 7–5, 6–1. The win in the final allowed Hingis and Mirza to be the fourth doubles partnership in history to win the Sunshine Double.
