The 2014 Vrancea earthquake struck Vrancea County on 22 November 2014 at 21:14:17 local time, with a moment magnitude of 5.7. [1] The earthquake occurred at a depth of 39 kilometers and lasted for thirty seconds. On the Mercalli scale the quake registered an intensity of VI (Strong). [2] [3] [4]

The earthquake was felt in northern Bulgaria and the Moldovan city of Chișinău. Towns located near the epicenter include: Mărășești (6 kilometers), Tecuci (22 kilometers), Focșani (21 kilometers), Adjud (25 kilometers) and Onești (51 kilometers). [1] Mircea Radulian, the leader of Institutul Național de Cercetare-Dezvoltare pentru Fizica Pământului, reported that in Galați and Focșani, towns nearer the epicenter, moment magnitude measured over 6.0. [5]

Damage

Shortly after the earthquake, Mobile Telephone network services were disrupted. [6] The frontage of an old building in Tulcea was damaged, and a radiator installed in a sixth-floor apartment fell and injured the owner. [7]

Four communes in Vrancea County lost electrical power. [6] In Focșani, a portion of a roof collapsed, [6] and a road cracked. [8]

Residents of northern Galați County were affected by electrical outages and water shortages. [9] [10]

The death toll makes it the second deadliest earthquake to occur in 1986 worldwide, after major seism of San Salvador that took the lives of almost 1,500 people.

An earthquake of magnitude 5.5 and a maximum Mercalli intensity of VI (Strong) occurred on 3 November 2010 in central Serbia just several kilometers from the city of Kraljevo. The shock was felt across the country, including the capital Belgrade, and in neighboring countries. Two people were killed and over 100 suffered light injuries. There were 5,967 structures that sustained some damage, 1,551 declared unsafe for use and require repairment, and 138 were damaged beyond repair. The 1738 Vrancea earthquake occurred on 11 June [O.S. 31 May] 1738, during the third rule of Constantin Mavrocordat. The seism aroused great panic and is mentioned in several sources. It occurred in the lower lithospheric block, at a depth of 130 km (81 mi). Its effects were violent on large areas, the hardest hit being Bucharest, where several houses and churches collapsed.
