She only lost one set during the tournament, to Garbiñe Muguruza in the fourth round; she also saved two match points in that match, making her the eighth woman to win the Australian Open after saving match points. Osaka became the first woman to win her fourth major singles title since Maria Sharapova in 2012, and the youngest since Justine Henin won the 2005 French Open. She also became the third player in the Open Era, after Monica Seles and Roger Federer, to win their first four major finals.

Karolína Plíšková was the defending champion from when the event was last held in 2019, but she lost in the first round to Camila Giorgi. As a result, Plíšková fell out of the top 10 of the WTA rankings for the first time since September 2016.

Defending champion Hsieh Su-wei and her partner, Elise Mertens, defeated Veronika Kudermetova and Elena Vesnina in the final, 3–6, 7–5, 9–7, to win the ladies' doubles tennis title at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships. The pair saved two championship points in the final en route to winning their first major together.
