The NRL Auckland Nines is a pre-season rugby league nines competition featuring all 16 NRL clubs. The 2015 competition was played over two days on 31 January and 1 February at Eden Park. The Tigers feature in the Hunua Ranges pool and played the New Zealand Warriors, Gold Coast Titans, Canberra Raiders and Sydney Roosters

Wes Naiqama is a Fijian Australian former professional rugby league footballer who last played for the London Broncos in the English Championship. He won 14 caps for the Fiji national rugby league team. He primarily played as a centre, fullback and winger, but can also fill in at second-row. He is the older brother of Huddersfield Giants player and fellow Fiji international, Kevin Naiqama.

The 2014 Penrith Panthers season was the 48th in the club's history. Coached by Ivan Cleary and co-captained by Kevin Kingston and Peter Wallace, the team competed in the National Rugby League's 2014 Telstra Premiership. The Panthers competed in the pre-season's 2014 NRL Auckland Nines. They then completed the 26-round regular season 4th place, reaching the finals for the first time since 2010. Penrith went on to come within one match of the grand final but were knocked out by the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.
