Angelique Kerber defeated Karolína Plíšková in the final, 6–3, 4–6, 6–4 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2016 US Open. It was her second major singles title. Kerber became the first player since Martina Hingis in 1997 to win both hard court majors in the same calendar year, having also won the Australian Open. She also attained the world No. 1 ranking for the first time after Serena Williams failed to reach the final. In addition to Kerber and Williams, Garbiñe Muguruza and Agnieszka Radwańska were in contention for the top ranking. The final was a rematch of the Cincinnati final three weeks prior, won by Plíšková.

Caroline Wozniacki was the defending champion and successfully defended her title, defeating Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the final, 6–0, 7–5. This marked Wozniacki's first title of 2017 and snapped a six-match losing streak in tournament finals.

Naomi Osaka defeated Daria Kasatkina in the final, 6–3, 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2018 Indian Wells Masters. It was her first WTA Tour title. At 20 years old, Osaka was the youngest Indian Wells Masters champion since Ana Ivanovic in 2008, and the youngest at any Premier Mandatory event since Caroline Wozniacki at the 2010 China Open. She was also only the third unseeded player to win the tournament after Serena Williams (1999) and Clijsters (2005), and the first Japanese player to win a Premier Mandatory title.

Kiki Bertens defeated Simona Halep in the final, 2–6, 7–6(8–6), 6–2 to win the women's singles tennis title at the 2018 Cincinnati Masters. En route to her first hard court & Premier 5-level title, Bertens defeated the world No. 2 & No. 1 players, in the second round and final, respectively. She became the first Dutchwoman to win the title.

Tímea Babos and Kristina Mladenovic defeated Hsieh Su-wei and Barbora Strýcová in the final, 6–2, 6–1 to win the women's doubles tennis title at the 2020 Australian Open. It was their second Australian Open title together. Despite the loss, Hsieh regained the WTA no. 1 doubles ranking for the first time since 2014, replacing her partner Strýcová. Mladenovic, Aryna Sabalenka and Xu Yifan were also in contention for the top ranking.
